Tumblr etc.

I stumbled, or caved, or some other word that means went ahead and did it, and I now have a tumblr. I'm not totally sure yet what I'm doing with it: so far there is a picture of Jensen, a picture of Adam Lambert, a picture of Frank Iero fondling Gerard Way's balls, a quote about writing, and the fact that Johnny Weir wishes he lived inside a Faberge egg.

In other news, I haven't gotten any further on my thesis, but I have written 1700 words on a new Jensen/Adam chapter. Because life is too short to skip the porn avoid stressing myself out, apparently. I'm trying not to do that icon meme going around, because that is more procrastination than I need this morning. be shocked if you don't see it by tonight, that means

Let the Dead Bury Their Dead

I've been reading Let the Dead Bury Their Dead by Randall Kenan for one of my classes, and it is absolutely wonderful. I pretty much have to agree with the cover quote by Terry McMillan:
Randall Kenan is a genius; our black Marquez. He weaves myth, folktales, magic, and reality like no one else I know, and doesn't miss a beat.

I've read four or five of the dozen stories, and am on the second reading of the third of the ones I have to write an essay on today. And I'm gleeing again over his genius way with words. The passage that made me think of LJ, unsurprisingly, was the one about men's thangs. from the story 'What Are Days?' )
Throughout the stories I've read he uses simile and metaphor in surprising ways that render everything vivid and alive and take me right with him wherever he's going. And he writes characters I want to spend time with. I forget, until I get a new one, how much I love collections of short stories. I highly recommend this one. Even if magical realism isn't your thing, I'd give it a try if you can get your hands on a copy.

A few points of probably not much interest

♥ Two hours until my final starts. I cannot wait for it to be over.

♥ I watched the American Idol final last night despite having never watched the show before. This morning I've been watching Adam Lambert perform on the website. And there is something about him that really really makes me want to pair him with Michael Rosenbaum. Anyone feel like writing that for me? *smiles winningly*

♥ I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] spn_meanttobe.

♥ Inigo is cracking me up. He's most unhappy about the fire alarm going off outside and keeps running around like a crazy thing.

♥ SYTYCD is back tonight! CAAAAT!!! (yes. again)

♥ I want to hear something that is making you happy today or this week or coming up this weekend. Whatever. Something HAPPY :D :D

some Monday bullets

  • I have no MCR music. People on my flist keep talking about them. I feel like I should remedy this lack somehow.
  • I can only manage to keep at my review sheets for 10 or so minutes at a time before I need to get up and do something else for a few minutes. This leads me to wonder how the hell I am going to make it through a three and a half hour final.
  • I really, really love Regina Spektor more and more the more I hear her.
  • I have done at least 30 minutes of Wii-fit every day since I got it except the two days I wasn't here. I am proud of this fact, and pleased that I didn't waste my money on the thing.
  • I have been missing S1-2 SPN canon so much lately. I can't decide if the follow-up sentence I only want to write pre-series fic should start with "Because of this," or "And yet,"
  • I have a fandom secret, but I avoid the fandom secrets page and have no idea how to post one, so I will just keep it to myself.
  • It's nothing bad, and certainly nothing bad about any fangirls. So no paranoia, please.
  • Not secret at all, THIS PSA about what to do if someone is having a seizure is adorable and hilarious. Quinto/Pine, Kirk/Spock, whatever. Adorable.
  • I have SO MANY fandom things to be writing, which is a rarity in my life. Generally I start something and then finish it and then move on. But now I have a queue, and many items on the queue have paragraphs or even pages written. Sadly, they refuse to prioritize themselves in order of time-sensitivity.
  • I got hugely spoiled for Brothers and Sisters on after elton's hot 100 today. This is the trouble with being a few series behind on a show. I had my usual spoiled sick feeling but then I got over it. It's Brothers and Sisters. I enjoy it, but spoilers are not going to ruin it for me. Why am I not surprised the after elton boys are big SPN fans?
  • I haven't read any long fic in ages. I miss it.
  • Watched The Secret Life of Bees last night. I liked the book better, not surprisingly, but I really enjoyed the movie too. And Dakota Fanning wasn't creepy, which was almost creepy in itself.
  • Now I think it's time to stop. Park, writing (without sunburn this time hopefully), and then back to review sheets. Oh, and lunch in there somewhere.

Happy Monday, my lovelies. ♥♥♥♥♥

Who needs grammar when you have icons?

So the time to leave for class came and went, and I just never left. Apparently it is one of those days. There's a walk-out protesting budget cuts, and I just. Don't know. Didn't want to spend three dollars on buses only to discover that no one was there, and to 'learn' about when to use which and when to use who. So I kept making icons.

Misha and Jared. Samples:

10 icons under here )

I suppose I really ought to do something productive, given I am skipping class.

FANBOYS

so last night there was this show I watch on, which distracted me from the thing I was going to post about my class yesterday. Which is this.

I was sitting there feeling a little sulky because I did the homework, and so many other people hadn't that the teacher gave us time in class to do it, but as mentioned, I had done it already, but couldn't even check my email because the school internet doesn't reach into that classroom. And I wasn't paying much attention and she was answering some questions and went up to the board and said, "So if you need mumblemumblesomething the acronym is FANBOYS mumblemuttercan'thearbecauseshejustwroteFANBOYSontheboard"

F.A.N.B.O.Y.S is the acronym for something grammar related that I will have to find out next week.

THIS MAKES ME HAPPY, OKAY?

Inigo decided to "help" me at my computer while I had the screen with my custom CSS on it open, and now I can't see my header (even after re-copying and pasting the script into the box), and I'm wondering if you can see it.

also, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] heidi8 (again *g*)

And now I'm off to pay my tuition and go to Trader Joe's.

The MLA referencing style might actually kill me. Or, at least cause serious harm to my belongings. Heavy things could go through my window at any moment.

IT'S F-ING STUPID!

a Sundayish post

I was this close to watching Torchwood last night before going to bed, but I couldn't keep my eyes open, so I watched it this morning instead. Only the finale remains... And Ianto/Jack is fucking HOT, even when it's only implied.

I've managed to do about 45 minutes of homework. It's 4pm and I've been up since 6.

My brother called earlier because he knows me too well. He was in a store and wanted to know if the car-seat he was looking at was cheaper on target.com. He figured the chances of my having the internet at my fingertips were pretty good. He was right.

more creative responses

So this week, we read Dutchman by Imamu Amiri Baraka [LeRoi Jones at the time he wrote the play in 1964]. It's an interesting play, and I would argue, an even more interesting movie. There's a whole lot going on in terms of race, and a lot of what I wrote down in my journal talks about that, but apparently I was struck by the issues of attraction and sexual predation too.

we had to write a creative response to Waiting for Godot last week. It was also to pertain to our chosen topics. Mine is (roughly) the ways information and communication technologies affect human interaction.

The Deluxe Transitive Vampire

I ordered a bunch of text books and some DVDs last week, and some of them have come. Including The Patriot, a book of short stories and poems by Maggie Dubris, called Weep not, my wanton, and a book for my professional editing class called, The Deluxe Transitive Vampire.

I must let you read the beginning of the jacket copy:

Here now is an enlarged version of the only handbook of grammar you will ever want to read. With this special edition, Karen Gordon gives the reader more illustrations and even more examples of confusing appositives, the many uses of gerunds, the complicated matter of agreements.

The Deluxe Transitive Vampire spins a lively gothic narrative with such characters as the Debutante, famous courtesan, wolf, bat, vampire, mastodon, pizza chef, lummox, lamia, and trilingual solitary. ...

so yes. A vampire themed grammar book. *g*

some examples from the section on Subject-Verb agreement:
The lingua franca in these parts is Rumanian mixed with blood and cash.

The bat suspended from Loona's hairdo was repulsed by her Nuit Blanche perfume.

Though, the book takes care to point out that things get more confusing when you have a group that may act as one or as individuals. To wit:
The menage a trois is rousing itself or trundling off to sleep.

or

The menage a trois are going back on their vows and are going their separate ways.

Blood, bats and threesomes. I like it. *flips pages* oooh! and solitary robots. *heee*

why yes, there will be spam

Sorry, but it is one of those days.

I've just been reading one of my assignments, 'Giovanni's Apartment' by Sam D'Allesandro, from his book The Wild Creatures. It was amazing to the point that I went onto Amazon Marketplace and bought not only that book but two others. Including one which is letters between him and one of the Professors at SFSU, which she compiled after his death. He was evidently one of those men about whom you think, he was the most beautiful man I ever knew, and that kind of charisma shines through his writing. It was the kind of story I wanted to drape over me, roll around in, drink down, and have with me always.

The kind that simultaneously makes you long to be a writer and never want to write again.

Intent

SFSU has finally let me declare my intent to register. So I can now officially say I have been accepted to uni, and so long as I give them money and proof that I've had my MMR vaccines, I can go to school in the 'fall.'

working on getting excited

I've been trying to be proactive today. I rang three estate agents and made three appointments for tomorrow for people to come round and do a market appraisal on the house. I emptied the diswasher while breakfast was cooking so that I wouldn't find I'd run out of energy to do it later. I used most of the rest of my iTunes credit from Christmas and bought a few songs and a Tori Amos album. I wrote a drabble and also nearly 600 words (so far) of more Rupert, who amuses me far more than perhaps he should. I can't help grinning when I'm writing dialogue with Rupert though.

I've also been looking at some of the classes on offer for my course. It looks like there is a lot to be interested in. A small sample here, under the cut )

I haven't figured out how many classes one takes each semester, and I don't know how many options one has each term, but I expect that is one of the things they will tell me. Now if it would just be morning in California so they would open up the intent to register page on the website...

you can't have everything that pleases you no matter how you try

I have been to the doctor this morning. In good news, she took my blood pressure and it is 'perfect.' Which is a huge improvement on 'oh dear' which is what it was when the 'lady doctor' took it. Amazing the difference a couple of milimetres of mercury can make. (ok, 14 mm)

In other news, she's referring me to the ENT bods at the hospital (Ear Nose and Throat for those jargon free types out there), and has signed me off work until 23 April. I'm starting to get worried that I won't be going back to work before I leave. And I actually really want to. Phoned work and they are really busy. 32 births already this month (we aim to average just under 1 a day) and still busy.

In good news, I got the official letter about my course that mom sent the other day.
If you want to read the letter )

So I'm happy about that. I am not exactly sure how to go about letting them know I plan to take the spot they've offered, when I got into UCSC I had a form to fill out. I suppose I just write them a letter.

And now I'd best eat some lunch.

They Want Me!

The Creative Writing Programme of SF State wants me! Mom phoned me just now, waking me out of a sound sleep, to tell me that the department has accepted me, and forwarded my application to the university with the recommendation that they accept me for approval!!!

I was so sound asleep that it's kind of hard to process the information, but she read me the letter (choking back tears of happy) and it seems to be true. Now assuming the school doesn't find some mysterious reason that I don't qualify to get a degree there, that means (as far as I can tell) that I'm in! and to the MFA programme too, which is the one I really wanted!

They flattered me with the news that there was stiff competition this year and that they in view of that they were especially impressed with the quality of my manuscript.

My mother has kindly rushed the acceptance letter down to the post office to get it in for the five o'clock post. So I should be able to touch the actual words by Wednesday. Now I'm just waiting for the online admissions site to change my status to accepted.
