The MLA referencing style might actually kill me. Or, at least cause serious harm to my belongings. Heavy things could go through my window at any moment.

IT'S F-ING STUPID!

AND NOW I'M OUT OF PRINTER PAPER!!!!

Ah, MLA. *empathizes*

My dissertation came with a 22-page style guide produced by my university. The first instruction in said guide was to follow all MLA-style guidelines. So, essentially, my style guide was three hundred pages long. It was excruciating, especially as I had 333 footnotes and a six-page bibliography, many of which cited works that were old before the U.S. became a nation.

Would it at all surprise you to learn that the Modern Language Association makes almost annual changes to the style guide in order to sell more copies of their newest editions of said guide? Yes, some of those changes are to accommodate the ever-changing nature of internet publications, but a lot of them are stupid mechanical pickayune things.

So yes, empathy abounds over here for you. :-) *hugs*

I'm stuck with online guides as I don't have a print one. I miss the Harvard method!

WHAT! MLA is my faaaaavorite! It's so much easier than APA. Also? Awesome online style guide: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/

I have that website open, I'm very glad to know it's a good one. I don't know APA. Harvard rocks though. It is totally clear, straightforward, simple, logical, and easy to use. It also makes WAY more sense in the text.

*weeps*

I know it's just that that's what I'm used to. But still...

Word 2007. It's saved me a LOT of stress as it has this handy "references" feature that you can use for citations and bibliographies. All you do is pick the type of source, plug in the info (author, date accessed, publication date, etc.) and it does the citations and bibliography FOR YOU. It's available in APA, MLA, Chicago, and a whole bunch of others. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

There's also citationmachine.net for something quick and handy. Hope that helps. :)

THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Great minds... I was just about to post about word to save you a trick but someone has thankfully alerted you to that one!

Do you have to run it through a plagiarism site as well? I had to do that for my dissertation and it caused me hours of worry - if you use the same quote as someone else it notes it as being plagiarised, even if you've used the quote in a completely different context. *gets scary panic attacks* I really hope you don't have to go through all that as well!

Good luck with it hun, and remember not long to go now! xxx

Oh, goodness! no. Our assignment is actually to edit a previously published article, making it 1/3 shorter, improving it, and making the references correct. So it would definitely fail at a plagiarism site!

thank god I didn't have to do that with my midwifery dissertation either. *wipes brow*

And here's the innocent version.

OMG if you came to OZ we would have so much fun! Like, coffee and stuff!
