This is the final season of Burn Notice. Every week when I watch an episode, I am sad about this, because despite its tropey premise and not-entirely-believable plots, I love it a lot. And every time I think about why, a lot of it comes down to the way the show treats women, and men as a result. I feel like in a lot of ways, this silly show about do-gooder ex-spies illustrates all those tumblr posts about how feminism isn't just good for women, it's good for men too.

In which I talk about why you should give Burn Notice a try if you haven't )
So, yeah. Burn Notice. I love it a lot, and I'm sad it's going, though so far, they seem to be giving us a pretty banging final season. The first five are available now streaming on Netflix, so if you're looking for something to pass the time, maybe while you're waiting for someone in charge to realize we're fucking serious about wanting a Black Widow movie, check it out :D

I watched it as it aired! Not only on Friday night, but at 9 o'clock. For the first time all season, not counting the episode at Wincon. I feel like I've maybe gotten past my disillusionment with it as a fandom show, and have found a place where I can go back to liking it on its merits as a TV show on its own. This makes me happy :D

a thought on the actual episode )

I had a whole long post I'd started about The Playboy Club and how much I liked it and the fact that there was finally a show on my TV with multiple strong and sexy female characters, who have relationships with each other not based on blood ties, but then NBC cancelled it so there doesn't seem much point. Instead, since I caught up last night, I'll talk about Supernatural.

the first three episodes )

So I will keep watching. At least for now. Even though if I record both SPN and CSI: NY, that means I cannot watch the Friday night Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives marathon that I got addicted to over the summer...

I woke up this morning to this staring right at me:

That wasn't disconcerting at all, no! o.o

In other news, Hawaii 5-O continues their trouncing of NCIS: Los Angeles in the most-married-cop-partners competition. NCIS had an early lead, but then H5O took the field, and, well, TOOK THE FIELD OMG. Sam and Gee live in each other's pockets, but I'm pretty sure Steve and Danny live in each other's PANTS. I was pretty much in it for Grace Park at the beginning, but there's no reason I can't lust, hearteye AND slash all at once. (which is pretty much Danny and Steve's philosophy as far as I can tell. Not that they limit their hearting to their eyes.)

In other other news, LJ still won't let me reply to comments. Even when it's up and running in all other ways. I can do one or two, and then, kaput. I'm working on it though! (as I know they are)

So if any of you were trying to get me to watch Hellcats while I wasn't paying attention, I apologise from the bottom of my heart for not listening to you. If any of you were watching Hellcats and not trying to get me to watch it, HAVE YOU MET ME? :D :D

But it's all good now, because the endlessly wonderful [livejournal.com profile] kohl_rimmed_eye is watching it and threatening to maybe write femslash about it, and that made me perk up and get as far as hot and awesome girls in short skirts being kick-ass, which led me straight to searching for episodes.

I am not exactly sure what I was expecting, but IT'S ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD. like, in addition to being about kick-ass girls in short skirts. I mean. It's a CW show. Produced by TOM WELLING. I didn't have all that high hopes beyond the pretty. But by and large the characters actually communicate with each other. And when lying happens to push plot forward, they don't string it out forever, they have the character be truthful. And the response to that seems generally to be mostly rational behaviour. It's not White Collar in this regard, for sure, but it is trying! And the few times that they've done something that I was thinking, "Oh, god, faily," one of the characters on the show has said, "Oh my god, why so faily?" to the perpetrator of the fail. It does a little preaching (don't cheat!) and a little glossing over of finance issues in institutional settings, and stuff like that, but nothing that isn't worse on a lot of other shows.

Plus. PLUS. It has competitive cheerleading. BRING IT ON. It has cheerleading uniforms. It has a guy and a girl who are BFFs. WITH EACH OTHER. It has female characters supporting each other and helping each other and hugging each other. The guys who aren't just generally assholes actually respect women. And I haven't noticed any slut shaming. Even when the two rivals are an inexperienced in life in general Christian girl and a girl who both enjoys sex and has no problem using it to get what she wants.

It's not perfect. I'm totally not saying it's perfect (even if it sounds like I am) but it really is so much better on an actual TV-show level than I was anticipating. better enough that I watched 6 episodes yesterday. so much for writing lots of fic

I feel the need to say something profound and awesome about Naya Rivera right now, but I cannot even think what. I have a complicated relationship with Glee, but Naya absolutely killed it with Santana's storyline tonight, and I do not feel confused about her at all.

Girl can sing, and move, and omfg, act. Plus, she's gorgeous. And kind of adorable.

Also, Mike O'Malley, how are you so freaking amazing?
