So if John Winchester was teaching Adam to drive in the Impala, and Dean was clearly somewhere else, what was Dean driving?

I dunno..
I always got the impression that Dean only inherited the Impala when John left/disappeared/died....

My fanon has always been that John gave Dean the car when he was a teenager (even though I know there is no canon basis to this). John specifically states that he 'gave' it to him. And Dean did need something to drive when he was doing hunting on his own while Sam was gone. Now I'm curious what :D

I don't think they were 'speaking' to Bobby then, according to what we know, so maybe he had a junker, or was boosting cars to drive, the way Sam's done? I got the feeling that they hadn't seen John's truck before when they met up with John again, but it's been a while since I saw the episode.

What exactly did he say about being taught to drive? I imagined it being more like he sat on John's lap while John steered or something. He turned 16 after John died, so I gathered it was one of those "teaching to drive" things that is nothing of the sort. Which would mean that, though Dean was over 16, he and Sam were left somewhere. After all, in After School Special, Dean is 18 and doesn't have his own car. Or, maybe they had Truckzilla, and John just took whichever car he felt like using at the time.

Truefax! It seemed they only had one car during After School Special, as John both dropped them off and picked them up when he returned. I assume if Dean had a car during that time, he'd have been driving him and Sam to school since he didn't know for sure exactly when John would be back.

They probably lived close enough to walk while John was gone...or take the bus. Ewwwwwwwwww.

But he didn't meet Adam until after Sam left for Stanford. So John was taking the Impala to Minnesota while Dean was somewhere else, presumably hunting. I find it hard to believe Dean was left places with no transportation after Sam left. And if John was with Adam between 12-15 ("He bought me my first beer when I was fifteen"), I figured he actually taught him to drive around the beer time.

How old was Adam again, when he met John? 12? So...what, John figures that instead of fixing his relationship with Sam, he'll make a better one with Adam? That's fecked.

I do hate John, actually. I've never really liked him. I didn't like Young!John, because he was a wussy little pussy who was completely whipped (#1 pet peeve where men are concerned), and as a parent, I can't abide a parent, fictional or not, who would do what he did with those children.

Yeah, he died for Dean, whoop dee doo, I really don't care. Once they started with the flashbacks, I started seeing that act less as a sacrifice, and more as trying to get away from his guilt. He sold his soul for Dean, but it was not unselfish. In my opinion, it seemed like he understood his shoddiness as a parent, and that seemed like a freaking fantabulous way for him to make up for it all in one fell swoop, and that's just selfish.

I gave you over an hour to edit, I refuse to feel guilty ;)

I'm all interested now that I have so much trouble writing characters who do 'bad' or 'unsympathetic' or whatever things, and yet have some tolerance for them in the context of being 'good' for a story or a fictional world. But you are so freaking BRILLIANT at writing those characters (Jared who is still sleeping with Chad and cheating on Jensen springs to mind) but less inclined to give slack. And yeah, I understand John's a parent. And I'm not a parent, but have been completely destroyed and fucked up by a relationship recently, so find the relationship stuff harder to forgive. Still, it's interesting. *smooches*

A. How uncouth of you to bring up unfinished business. I never finished all that. LMFAO.

B. It's the parent thing. I'm less inclined to give a parent any slack in regards to their children, and I think that John fucked up his kids, and I'm not all that forgiving, LMAO. Fictional characters and all. I can't pinpoint any specific reason for me to dislike him so much. It's just that the minus column beats out the plus column.

Maybe Dean & John had a huge fight and John stormed off, stranding Dean and spitefully allowing Adam to drive the car? AND THEN HE FELT GUILTY, CAME BACK, AND GAVE IT TO DEAN.

It's just because I could totally see John muttering to himself, I'll show that Dean, I'll let my NEW son drive the car. See how he likes THAT, and then being overcome with self-loathing and angst, and getting all drunk and weepy and dramatic and than ceremoniously handing over the keys when he gets back. And that image made me giggle.

I'm sure IRcanon it would be much more macho and heartbreaking.

Exactly. I've always thought that the Impala was officially Dean's before Sam left for Stanford based on the fact that in the Pilot, Sam never questions Dean having the Impala, even while he DOES question why Dean and John weren't working together. So John taking the Impala to see Adam after Sam leaves doesn't really make sense and requires us to invent unlikely scenarios such as John and Dean swapping cars for implausible reasons.

that is a very good point about the Pilot. Sam isn't at all surprised. I can see how John would want to show his baby (which I'm sure he still loved even after he gave it to Dean) to his 'new son'. It is a part of himself, and of his old life before hunting.

Thank you! In my personal canon, John originally got Truckzilla as a fixer-upper that was going to be Sam's...which he never directly told Sam, just that the Impala was going to be Dean's. So Sam stomps out and goes to Stanford, Dean and John fight, the truck is in pieces, John "borrows" the Impala to visit Adam, etc.

I remember having the impression the boys had never seen truckzilla before they met up with John again, but that might just be the truckbed mods they hadn't seen. It's been a while since I saw the episode.
