I have historically not been all that excited about the audition weeks of SYTYCD beyond YAY IT'S BACK IT'S BACK, but they've really been doing a MUCH better job with them the last couple years and I only had to ffwd through one little segment last night. And then rewind one and watch it a couple times.
video here
OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD OHHHMYGOD.
I love dance. Not in the way a dancer loves it, I'm sure, and not in a way where I spend money to go and see people dancing on a regular basis, but I love that we can make art and tell stories with our bodies as well as with all the other media we find to use. I absolutely loathe competition TV shows on the whole, but every cringe-inducing moment is worth it so that I can see the dancing on SYTYCD. And I'm often moved by it. Getting teary-eyed when I watch is not a new thing.
But I have NEVER ended up doubled over, ugly crying, with goosebumps on every inch of my body, gasping for air before. Twice. Because I had to watch again.
That speech he gave before he danced about taking your fears and about souls and all that stuff that made Nigel bitchface... It's hard to listen to something like that and believe it's true. But apparently it's true. I feel like I'm a markedly different person having seen that dance in a way that I usually only get from novels. (I don't know that I AM a markedly different person, but I feel like it.)
I want to see so much more from Mr. Williams.

SERIOUSLY, GIRL. GIVE ME ALL OF YOUR SYTYCD FEELINGS ALWAYS. I WANT THEM. I LOVE THIS SHOW LIKE BURNING AND HAVE BEEN WATCHING SINCE SEASON 2.
HE WAS INCREDIBLE AND I CAN'T EVEN HANDLE MY FEELINGS AT ALL. I NEED TO WATCH IT FIFTY MILLION MORE TIMES.

oh god I made my colleague watch it at work and I got all teary again right there on the shop floor (with no customers in thank goodness) and I just. I CANNOT. WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THAT AMAZINGNESS.

Like you, I haaaaaaaaaaaate competition shows in general but I really appreciate that SYTYCD has collaboration built into its structure; yes, the dancers are competing against each other, but they're also working together, and those partnerships are always one of the major highlights of the show for me. And unlike the talent competitions that are looking for "stars" (whatever that even means), SYTYCD absolutely REQUIRES a pretty high level of ability, and because dancers don't have the place in popular culture that musicians do, finding the Next Big Thing isn't even on the table, so it allows them to focus more on the actual skill, including both technical ability and performance. I hate the bullshit and the trappings (though I will say I have never felt like there was a winner who was completely undeserving; my favorites haven't always won, but I've always at least felt like whoever won was a really talented dancer/performer) but I still think SYTYCD has significantly LESS bullshit and trappings than pretty much any other competition reality show I've seen (except maybe America's Best Dance Crew). Which is why it's the only one I watch, for all that I love several American Idol peeps. :)

I would absolutely love it if he turns out to be another Twitch, who can turn his hand at all the other styles, but if he isn't, I hope that we do get to see some more of THAT. I cannot think of any other art that has made me have such a violent visceral reaction. GORGEOUS.

I am so excited toooooo. I was just blown out of the water by him. I can't believe the way he just spit his soul out on that stage through movement.

I was fond of quite a few people at the auditions, and I think that this season is going to be FILLED with talent. ♥
