a) they are adorable
b) it's cool that this is happening - that people are being counted in the cencus if they consider themselves married - but is it going to show how many couples consider themselves married but can't do it legally? I couldn't see a bit on the form for denoting that? (I'm in the UK, this might be something everyone over there knows about and I'm just being dim...)

also, I'm waiting very patiently for my sister and her hubby to be ready to watch 5x15 so that might not have made a lot of sense (my mind ain't exactly 100% focussed right now...)

The census doesn't really show anything. You can get stickers to put on saying that you are queer or queer supportive, but all it asks is the relationship of the other person and their sex. I'm not even sure they correlate if the sex is the same or different from person 1. But yay for encouraging people to put they are married even if it's only in their church or community and not a state-recognized marriage :D

SHOW!

They have in the past. I worked with Census data for a project several (more than ten) years ago, and there was information about same-sex couples who live together. Of course the census can only count couples who live together, but still, it was interesting. There also was information on the number of same-sex couples living together who had children in the household.

And single adults with children, roommates, relatives living together, etc., etc. The Census has some awesome stats geeks working there -- they crunch the data every way they can! :D

OH YAY! I'm so excited to hear that! Thank you! *takes off cynic hat and puts on data-geek hat*

PS. The Census also releases so much of its data in analysis-ready form that if the government doesn't calculate the number of same-sex couples who consider themselves married even though they live in a jurisdiction that prohibits same-sex marriage (they have zip code level data, don't forget), someone else will.

I need a "data groupie" icon. : )

\o/

I shall leave that to people who didn't cry when they had to do statistics work for their midwifery thesis, but I will be interested to see it!

George Takei is so awesome! And his husband is so nerdy it's adorable (the belly laugh from George at the end is brilliant!)

So adorable!

And also, "YAY!" for the underlying message.

Let the census processors try to quantify the kind of data they didn't expect, and cope with the freakin' truth.

This is how we move forward.

They are awesome :D

I have no idea if they will even correlate the marital status sections and the gender sections, but I think standing up is important anyway. as you say. this is how we move forward.

I have met George Takei several times (at conventions) and he is completely and totally amazing (and very, very silly, in the best possible way) XD

Those two make such an awesome couple - I was squealing with glee the whole time I was watching it :D

Yay! I read an article about this beautiful story, where George was intent on proposing to Brad when the gay marriage would be legal in California. But then they watched it on the news and in that very same moment Brad fell to his knees before the couch and proposed himself. Aww, I could hardly read the whole story because of my eyes swimming from the tears of joy I wept. Those two are so sweet and special and are such a great team after more than 20 years together, that is so rare and precious.
And me, being a trekkie and an a rainbow person and a tinfoil hat wearer myself, gotta love 'em! :D
