I'm probably being a bit of a spanner here but I have never participated in one of these auctions before ... how do I pay if I win? I haven't bid yet as I don't want to win and then discover I can't pay!

this particular one is a direct donation thing. So you give whatever your winning bid is to the charity of your choice (from the list, I'm guessing), for example Oxfam or Red Cross, and then provide the email or screencap proof to your person. You'll definitely be able to pay.

and not a spannery question at all! that part hasn't been made terribly clear yet. But there will definitely be options viable in other parts of the world than the US.
