This probably seems like a super random poll, and I'm not going to argue that. But last night I dreamed that I did this poll as part of a school project, and when I woke up it turned out I was curious about the answers. So here you have it. :D

[Poll #1494697]

I don't know what you're talking about...
give me the wiki link please,
or tell me more about this YouTube you mentioned.

I've seen it on tv - probably as part of a documentary or something, I can't really remember. I don't actually find it that funny, but I could say the same about a lot of old-style humor (Marx brothers, Charlie Chaplin, etc.).

I don't find it funny either. and have NO IDEA why I dreamed about it. I first saw it in Cooperstown, on endless loop. it was more interesting than looking at plaques about a bunch of players I'd never heard of. But I knew about it before then.

Oh god, it made me laugh 'til I couldn't breathe the first time I saw it. It still makes me laugh. Now I have to go find it on YouTube.

Ha! We made a section of this routine part of the auditions for Guys and Dolls when we put it on in college, so I actually got to read Abbott's part about 20 times one weekend. :)

I have to admit that when I made this poll, I was suspecting that you would have some kind of story related to it. I do not know why, but I am really glad to be proven right :D

I'd love to have a YouTube of that!

Oh dear. Am I that predictable?

let's just say that I hadn't put that option in, and when I was previewing the poll, I thought about you, and dreamlittleyo and sadcypress, and decided to add it. ♥

Well, if [livejournal.com profile] sadcypress turns up having done it, I'm having you pick the trifecta at the track for me next weekend.

I see Dean doubts that I will succeed. :D

No, no. That's Dean's "Wow, you are Quite Impressive" face.

(See Sam's in this icon. *points above* It runs in the family.)

And by "performed it myself" I actually mean as a dramatic duo participant in my high school speech team. By the end of the competition season I had that sucker memorized, but alas it is long gone now - all but the first handful of lines.

I coach forensics! I have a Duo team doing this piece this year (their choice)! *grins hugely*

"Third base..."

I used to coach forensics! I tried to get one of my HDA teams to do this but they chose a different piece instead. :-( I really want to do it myself one day, to tell you the truth.

What's exciting about explaining my answer is that there's an actual connection to Jared Padalecki.

I coach competitive forensics. I have a Duo Interp. team doing "Who's on First" right now.

Jared Padalecki and his duo partner were the 1998 National Forensic League Grand Champions in Duo Interp.

The world is a strangely small place, isn't it? *grins*

(I've also heard a radio version of the original.)

Yay, Jared Padalecki! :D

Okay, this poll is turning out to be WAY more interesting than I'd imagined.

In my sixth grade class, we had a unit on Who's On First in our textbook, oddly enough. Who doesn't know that sketch? I am now sad for today's youth.

Everyone might know it. Everyone on my flist so far does. In my dream I was writing an article about the baseball hall of fame for a journalism class and had to ask about it.

I actually think we studied it in school, now that you say that. In an english class, though I don't know what grade.

it's sad to be the first person here to say my earliest memory of it is off the Simpsons, the episode where Krusty meets his daughter and he wouldn't let her mother kill Saddam because it would ruin his "Who's on first" sketch. XD
since then i've encountered it in other things, mostly because i sideline study freakshows/circus/vaudeville/burlesque and it comes up a lot. :P

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 04:33am on 05/12/2009
I should have known that the Simpsons would have done it :D

posted by [identity profile] chocolate-frapp.livejournal.com at 06:07pm on 05/12/2009
the Simpsons did it twice, actually, Skinner and Chalmers did it for a school talent show and Skinner screwed it up.

God, that's one of my favorite comedy sketches EVER! It's just amazing. In fact, I'm going to go watch it now!

It is brilliant, I must agree. Just not really my sense of humour :)

I was filled with glee that there was an option for "I've performed it myself"!!! Doing that sketch with my sister at the family reunion is one of my fondest memories. :)

I'm so glad I added that in at the last minute! :D \o/

I always love to be able to remind someone of fond memories :D

I remember reading the script in one my HS English textbooks and the teacher also playing a record (that's right I said record) of it being performed, it was either Abbott and Costello doing it or maybe the original vaudeville. I cannot really recall.

My English teacher played us a record of Olivier's Hamlet speech. :D

Who knew a dream could lead to such fascinating responses? Hee!

I have always been obsessed with old Hollywood and with humor, so I've seen/heard the A&C version a lot. Plus, it's just fun from a wordsmith's point of view. :)

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 05:20pm on 05/12/2009
I know! In my dream it was much more boring.

It is definitely fun from a wordsmith's POV. It's super clever. It pings my (father-inspired) extreme frustration with seeming deliberate obtuseness, though, and so I don't find it as funny as it should be.

Classic! I remember seeing one of the original versions where the 'd' word (damn) was used in the end bit, and the audience was SHOCKED.

I knew of the sketch and had seen it once upon a time; but since it's wasn't in my easily reachable memory, I didn't remember the reference until I read the Wiki?

LOL COMPLICATED EXPLANATION TO SAY NOTHING. :D :D

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 07:41pm on 05/12/2009
hahaha :D

It seems like something that is more in the consciousness of people living in the US, which makes sense. I thought there would be more people for whom it was a cultural reference rather than something they'd actually seen first hand. So I am glad of your explanation! :D

I grew up on this stuff, and the first time I heard the routine, I laughed my ass off. In fact, to this day, I find myself saying, "Third base!" whenever someone says, "I don't know." Half the people get it, the other half look at my like I am mental.

There have been a bunch of homages to it over the years, although my favorite was probably the Animaniacs version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlXjIg4fH74) with Slappy the Squirrel at Woodstock. :-)
