First, on He's Just Not That Into You. I thought, when I saw the 10 cliches you won't see ad, that I wanted to slash Bradley Cooper with every boy ever (helped by his turns on Alias, Kitchen Confidential, and Nip/Tuck), but it turns out I pretty much just want him to sex everyone he stands next to ever no matter their gender, orientation, or looks. First I want him to be adorable with them. I ♥ Bradley. I harted the movie too. Lots of people I love, and it was funny without being goofy or having the fun based on people falling over and getting hurt. Also, Justin Long? please be in every movie. Thanks.

Second, [livejournal.com profile] delicatelight gave me five things she associates with me.

1. John Travolta's hair
John Travolta had good, if slightly ridiculous hair in Grease, and baaaad hair in Pulp Fiction. But he had OMGWTFBBQ hair at the Oscars last year, which [livejournal.com profile] delicatelight and I noticed and commented on at the same time on a big group chat, and thus we were bonded for life! I'm not much of a Travolta fan, and even less so with hair that looks like it was black christmas tree flocking sprayed onto his head, but I will always have a soft spot for him a) for giving me all those summers of my life singing and dancing to the Grease soundtrack in my next door neighbour's front yard, and mostly b) for giving me [livejournal.com profile] delicatelight!

2. San Francisco
San Francisco has always been The City to me, even when I lived in England and to most people I met "The City" was the financial centre of London. SF is an amazing place. Part of the reason I love it is my home city bias, I'm sure, but there is a lot to recommend it other than that. It's surrounded on three sides by water and on the fourth by other separate cities, so it is small (by city standards) and cannot get any bigger. There are no sprawling suburbs that get incorporated and incorporated into a teeming mass, it just is what it is. And what it is is a collection of distinct and diverse and amazing neighborhoods. Except for snow, I cannot imagine that there is something a person could want that can't be found in San Francisco. Well, unless you want the ability to walk more than a mile in any direction without confronting a hill. Because that's pretty much not going to happen unless you stick to walking around the edge of the bay.

3. England
England was my home for most of my adult life, until June 2007. More specifically, the south of England. For, much like with California, you cannot say "England" and mean any kind of uniform thing. There was a lot that I loved about it, though the weather and plumbing did not appear on that list. But the refreshing lack of insane puritanical 'values', the interesting television, the BBC news, the National Health Service (omg seriously no WORDS for how much I miss this), small gas-efficient cars, trains that go everywhere, Brighton, London, Bill's Produce and Deli, Sainsbury's, my friends.... I loved those things and more. A lot.

4. Candle Salad (!!!)

I really feel you need to see what we're talking about here. There is also the things people say about it: When my son was a child we fixed this salad that had him eating his fruits with delight. "Candle Salad" is fun for children and adults. It's the ingredients you use; the ingredients you combine; and how you present your faire that wins or loses. The appearance of food creates favor or disfavor before the first bite. So it's important to make your meals look inviting.
I MEAN. LOOK AT IT. Just saying.
Candle Salad appeared in a bandom fic, and [livejournal.com profile] delicatelight linked, and I read, and became obsessed for the night. I looked up pictures and recipes and made icons and all sorts. And it still makes me laugh. Weirdest thing, the next day, my mom sent me an email with the subject line: What is Candle Salad? and I was completely stunned that it had appeared in her life and mine on the same day. But it turned out that I had linked her to a picture of my pigeons on my photobucket, and she'd seen all the candle salad pics.

5. Cat Deeley
CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT OMG I love her. She was a children's TV presenter in the UK when I lived there, and I didn't think much about her, because I didn't watch children's TV. But then I started watching So You Think You Can Dance (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jelloh0530 and [livejournal.com profile] delicatelight) and I became OBSESSED. She is INSANELY adorable, and so so so sweet, and gorgeous, and has the best smile and such amazing legs, and she gets down on the floor to fix a girl's shoe even when she's wearing a tiny dress, and she puts big fake gold teeth in her mouth even when someone else was just wearing them and she gives HUGE hugs, and she cries along with people and OMG I LOVE HER. I might have mentioned that already. But it's true. She's enthusiastic and geeky and funny and hot. And I'm pretty sure I would marry her tomorrow given half a chance.

Candle Salad will never not be funny. And the fact that it's a Mormon thing makes it even funnier.

OMG I totally forgot, in my delight about the hilarious picture, to mention the Mormon thing.

Candle Salad FTW

THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME FEEL OLD! ;)

Ant and Dec always freaked me out a little because I never knew which was which, and one of them totally looks like an 80s lesbian.

I adore Justin Long...but for some reason, I know so many people who seem to find him loathsome. And I don't know why that is.

I think many people find those they always see in adverts annoying. but it's not fair to poor Justin. For he is made of win. Of course, first thing I saw him in was Live Free or Die Hard, so he was associated with awesome from the start.

I loved him in this. Such a different role.

The first thing I saw him in was Galaxy Quest, so the awesome was well-established by the time LFoDH came around. :-)

OH MY GOD. OF COURSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally forgot that I had realized that was who he was. I LOVE HIM IN THAT.

I love everything in that movie.

I just rewatched Galaxy Quest the other day and recognized him in it! Which I hadn't noticed him there last time I saw it, ha ha.

I mainly know him from Accepted. I love that movie so much!

Bless those who are too inocent to see the obvious. They provide many hours of ammusement. *snerk!* Candle salad indeed.

Hmmm...things I associate with river's_bend...

1. Awesome accent.

2. Nursing and midwives (midwiving?)

3. Sam and Dean

4. San Fransisco and [livejournal.com profile] skyblue_reverie visits.

5. That crazy badfic you told me you helped write where Dean's cock and balls come back from hell before he does. I kept meaning to ask you for a link, and I finally remembered.

Oo! Bradley Cooper! I was into Kitchen Confidencial for a while, but the slash was sadly lacking (in quantity, not quality).

oooh. that took some finding. badfic is here (http://taskmaster69.livejournal.com/) :D

I saw all of KC in one night, so the slash was kind of compressed. Which is to say there was that one episode with Vaughn from Alias and it was SO SO SLASHY that it kind of made up for the whole rest of the series which was lacking.

*smishes you*

How are you, honey? ♥

EEEEeee! Badfic! Yay! Thank you! I'm totally saving it for when I get all my work done. motivation, you know. :)

*smishes back* I'm doing good, hon, how are you? School is kicking my ass right now - test after test, paper after paper, and we're only four weeks in! I'm gonna be burned out by the end of the semester.

So he's just not in to u is worth a watch then? It looks kinda cheesy but as u say it has lots fo good people in it.

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 11:03pm on 20/02/2009
It's actually really not cheesy. Like, surprisingly so. It doesn't have happy endings all around and even the cheesiness is totally tinged with reality, but sweetly. wow. okay that's not even making sense. but definitely give it a watch. I am pretty sure you will like it!

It's actually only a bit more expensive than the DC area. I don't know, I think housing and utilities are slightly higher but the buses are about the same and the groceries and restaurants seem a tiny bit cheaper in general. Montgomery County, where I live now, is way up there in terms of cost of living.

I love watching dance! Now I'm looking forward to a new season of that this summer.

JUSTIN LONG IS FOREVER ENDEARED TO ME FOR A WHOLE SHITLOAD OF DIFFERENT REASONS.

Must see this mooovieee. Must see, must seee. *froths at the mouth*

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 11:05pm on 20/02/2009
You should definitely see it. It's much better even than I thought it would be.

Also, Justin Long? please be in every movie.

Could not agree more. I jsut saw the film tonight and loved it (especially Justin).

Also, I went to uni in Brighton - did you live there or just like to visit? I loved Brighton, and I don't get back there nearly enough (I live in Bournemouth and love it so couldn't possibly move anywhere, but if I had to... it'd be to Brighton.)

Ahhhh... the much maligned NHS... my mum and dad (and sister and both brothers come to think of it) would be dead many times over t'were not for them... mum has to take about 6 or 7 different medications daily, she'd NEVER be able to afford that if she had to pay full whack for it all. Also, dad just had his hip replaced and is in hospital for minimum 2 weeks... no way ANY of us could afford to pay for that!

He was great.

I did live in Brighton for like 13 years. Went to Sussex Uni for one year and then a few years later, to Brighton Uni for three.

I definitely saw some of the downsides of the NHS, working for them for 10 years, but its good far outweighs the bad. Especially now I'm living here and can't afford to go to the doctor.
