I don't think we know their middle names. Or at least I don't. Hmm. And I've been paying attention for them because my personal canon is that Dean's middle name is Michael and Sam's is John.

I don't know why, that's just what I feel. :D

Honestly? It's not really in the episode itself. Michael is (I think) the only angel mentioned by name in that episode, as "The fighter of demons, holy force against evil.." That was the episode that established angels in this verse as warriors, and it's not explicit in the episode, but there was a lot of meta at the time linking Dean with Michael. The fact that this verse has the forces of good play out through humans with free will, as opposed to supernatural good entities, the fact that the show has always sort of set John up as God as Dean as his lieutenant/warrior.

Michael is generally called the field commander of the armies of God, and is most often referred to as the defender. AND it links Dean to Michael, the protective older brother in Something Wicked. AND Michael had a long-standing enmity with Samael, from the time Samael fell from heaven, and is said to have fought him many times. AND he's the angel with the greatest connection to ideas of protection and personal loyalty (as the defender of Israel). AND he's supposedly the angel who stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac- so, a heady stew of defense/protectiveness/warrior against demons, plus the family loyalty and attempt to prevent Samael from falling from heaven and attempt to stop him once he did combined with his abhorrence of family sacrifice... *shrugs* heady meta, to say the least.

It's general fanon that Dean's is Michael and Sam's is John. The actual names have never been revealed either on the show or in an interview. ::shrugs:: NOT YET, ANYWAY.

clearly i have been absorbing fanon and had no idea, because that's just the name that came out on paper without me thinking about it, and it wasn't until I was typing up that it occurred to me there might be something else that people know/think it is *g*

I want to say that their middle names, or middle initials, were mentioned in the first or second issue of the Supernatural magazine. Not in one of the main articles, but as some of the stuff they wrote in the margins and such... I'll try and remember to check when I go home.

If that's what their middle names really were because Kripke liked what fandom said just that much. He's such a fanboi geek, it could happen... He'd totally tune into the hivemind. Even if it was to yank them around a little later on... (evil man, lol)

I will indeed check. I've even written a note to myself on my hand so that I can't forget... or at least when I do my roommate will ask me what it is and acheive the same affect :D

Alas, I was wrong. There's things like their birthday's and Dean's pickup lines and other little factoids, but no middle names. Fanon and its hivemind shall be the rule!

I've always thought they didn't have middle names (because they don't show up on their police records, where they most assuredly would), but I agree that Michael is a fabulous choice for Dean. Not so sure about John for Sam -- just because it doesn't scan as well.

Sam John Winchester doesn't work well, but I kind of like Samuel Johnathan Winchester.

For Sam's middle name, in my WIP I gave him one of the street names in my old neighborhood. Maybe I'll give Dean one of the street names near my new place. :)

I pretty much never make up names, characters give me their names if they are OCs and I expect canon to give me the names for fanfic. But I had this weird feeling that there was a fanon middle name for Dean. And lo, it seems there is, and that my subconscious already knew it. VERY STRANGE.

I've always been on board with Dean Michael and Samuel John, and I fully expect Kripke to validate that at some point.

And I don't know if it's relevant (or if you already knew it), but John's middle name is Eric.

Hee, yes. I am quite the information junkie, myself. In fact, I made someone tell me the name, because it was in a spoiler-laden article. Actually, she said "In this interview, Kripke reveals what the "E." in "John E. Winchester" (from the headstone in What Is...) stands for, but you can probably guess." And I said, "Um, Eric? Because of course Kripke is going to name the badass Dad after himself." And it was confirmed. :D
