I think I've done pretty well so far today.

I've managed to pack a box of games and books, a box of things from the filing cabinet, and a box of clothes and photographs and sundry stuff. I've gone through the filing cabinet and recycled or added to the shredding pile the things I'm not taking with me. I've cancelled my car insurance from the date I fly and yay, I get £81 back as a refund for the rest of the year! I've asked for a change of ownership form from the phone company so the phone can be put into B's name. I've collected B from the mechanic's shop. I've had a haircut. I've eaten lunch.

To do:
take B to pick up his car when it's done
go through the files on the desk
get out the paperwork for my car that I will need to sell it
take the pictures in clip frames out of clip frames... it's going to be easier to get new frames.

go to pictures!

Thank you so much to everyone who is being supportive and not running screaming from my constant carping on about the fact that I'm moving. I worry that I'm boring all of you to tears.

Gosh, you put me to shame! I've been back at work for hours now, and all I've managed to do is to read through my f-list and get annoyed at the amount of paperwork that seems to have gone astray in my absence. *grrrrrr*

You're doing great! All those encouraging vibes are clearly working :D

I think I can count on the fingers of one hand times when I would have put you or anyone else to shame. But definately the encouraging vibes are helping. :D

Considering my biggest skill is spinning round in circles shreiking 'I CAN'T DO THIS!' I'm not sure you really want my help *g*

I may have to hire your services when we FINALLY get a date for the move - no, wait, you'll be abroad by then!!

Good productivity ratings to you!

Beware when taking piccies out of frames - they can stick to the glass and peel off if the slightest bit of moisture got in there at any point in their union.

Ooh, encouragement AND handy hints all in one!

That is a good hint. So far I've been ok on that front, but I haven't got to the frames that were hanging near the radiator that we dry clothes on, so I'll look out for that.

I'm feeling slightly guilty that I'm leaving the ex with the whole rest of the house to sort out, including getting rid of anything I'm leaving behind that isn't his. But hey-ho.

Good luck to you when your time finally comes!

On the up-side, he's gaining an awful lot of shelf-space!!

Hope it's as amicable as it can be. When I left my ex I left everything he'd ever given me in a big (well, smallish) pile in the living room...

Unfortunately he didn't trip over it, but nothing's ever perfect!

Whatever, don't feel guilty, I'm sure he'll deal with it manfully. AND it means you won't have to cope with all those little annoying things that have nowhere specific to live/be removed to.

I really hate those little bits...

Thanks for luck, we'll need it!

The good thing is that it is amicable. We actually split up 16 months ago and have been living together since, mostly getting along pretty well. I'm actually to the point now where I tucked some of the cards and stuff he's given me over the years into boxes today.

He's definately gaining more shelf space. I shouldn't have taken so many of the books probably. *rolls eyes at self*

I can't begin to fathom having to do this with an ugly break up to boot.

And when we moved 3 years ago I had to deal with it ALL, the packing the paperwork, the estate agents, house hunting, the solicitor, the ONLY thing he did was the mortgage. So, his turn.

Moving was the MOST difficult and exhausting thing I did in my life, and I include in this landing some cushy jobs, snatching interviews from the competition at the Cannes Film Festival, and getting shot at in Southern Lebanon. You have my healthy respect and admiration.

Under most circumstances I would be tempted to wonder how anything is more difficult and exhausting than getting shot at, but I think I might be with you there on the moving thing. It nearly killed me when we moved four streets away 3 years ago. The added hassle of deadlines, oceans and continents is not helping.
Thanks!

Well, getting shot at is a doddle, because you don't do much (apart from wearing a pink shirt. The first day, I'd shown up with a beige safari-jacket-type coat. "Are you out of your SKULL?" my [older, more experienced] colleagues yelled. You DON'T want to wear anything that looks remotely military. You want something that SCREAMS 'civilian'. Go change THIS MINUTE!" So I did.)

And mostly, incoming was Katiusha mortar shells, which are notoriously imprecise. Statistically, I was pretty much on the safe side. West Beirut, where I did not set foot, was another matter.

*whimpers pathetically*

I'm still holding Frankenstein together on a wish and a prayer.

Tomorrow... i'm going to look at Macs...maybe...

i just saw the mac/pc/linux drama. what the hell is linux? (rhetorical question, I'll google it)

I'm considering getting a mac too. Though my friend who had a mac at work and a pc at home said macs are more fiddly to use on the whole.

An operating system, I think? But I do not want, and people get so so pushy about it.

Have a strengthening lolly XD

I moved twice last year, so I know what a chore it is to pack everything up - ugh - plus I wasn't moving across an ocean!

Good luck for as stress-free a move as possible.

I love that you can always be counted on for a lolly :D Thank you!

TWICE? I couldn't do it. I'm hoping I find a place I love when I get back and can stay there for the next two years. I will have to move from Mom and Dad's house to wherever that may be, but I don't plan on unpacking much but clothes between now and then.

Ooh, you're shiny and organised honey :) You're doing very well, and don't worry about 'carping on'; it actually isn't boring, and you need to let it out and as far as I can tell everyone's more than happy to listen.

*hugs*

I worry that I'm boring all of you to tears.

I'm not sure where you're moving to or from, but OMG I know those freakouts so well. I HATE moving. So you just post about it to your heart's content - you have my sympathies, totally.

I am moving from England to California. The former having been my home for the last fifteen years and the latter was home for the first 19. So in a way I'm going home, and in a way I'm leaving home. In all ways it is definately freaking me out. So thank you for understanding!

You are tremendously organised. I remember moving out of my student hovel and just shoving everything into black binliners and taking it all home with me. Even the rubbish. Moving is so traumatic and such a faff. I do not envy you! (Except for the part where you're moving somewhere really cool to do creative writing and get even better and all published and stuff, but let's not talk about the jealousy that eats at my soul. *g*)

Every other time I've moved, I've done the shove in bin liners and boxes way. But when it costs hudreds and hundreds of pounds to ship things, the organised approach starts to look better and better.

I do need to leave the stress and remember that I'm getting to do something really cool... *g*

The last minute sprinter. That's me *g* (so long as we're not talking actual sprinting, cos I'm far too out of shape)

Every essay I've ever done, every assignment... I guess I need the pressure.
