Since it sounds like not only the LJ default pages, but some people's custom pages are fucked beyond belief by the new rollout, I'll say that the 'flexible squares' layout hasn't changed at all, and everything works/looks the same to me. In case you're not wanting to experiment to find a working layout. ETA you also need to not disable custom comment pages. (under basic options in customize journal style).

I will also say that I regret SO MUCH that I got a permanent account here. the new icon-choosing method means that unless I go to style=mine I can only use my default icon on my phone because there is literally no way of choosing a different one, and removing half the comment features I used most on communities is just ridiculously irksome. I quite liked getting to see other people's headers and such, but style=mine it is, I guess.

do you have the "disable custom comments" button checked to make your pages the plain white LJ default? In Journal Style, click "customize your theme" in the upper right hand corner where it tells you your'e using flexible squares, and then under Basic Options, make sure "Disable customized comment pages for your journal" is set to "No". also check that your site scheme is set to Horizon in Profile>>Account Settings>>Display.

Yes, I do have the CCs disabled! I just tried it out the other way, and it makes my comments all nice and regular, but the page gets all squished together and BLUE!!! Aww, screw it, it is fail either way but I think I will have to go with white default page vs the horrible layout of my custom one. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING???

the blue must be the color you've chosen for flexible squares; you can change that if you want. Some of the Flexible Squares themes are mostly white. and you can make it wider by going back to where the basic options were, and under additional options, change it to 80 or 90%.

I have flexible squares, too. And I turned on custom comment pages and am viewing everything in my own style so as not to come down with a headache every time I load a new page.

I get that, despite what it looks like from our corner of the internet, fandom isn't actually LJ's largest user base, so maybe taking away the subject lines seemed like a good idea (I don't really see HOW, but if they have a logic, okay), but making it difficult/impossible for mobile-device users to use? there is just NO WAY IN HELL that makes any sense at all. Because that user base is only going to get larger and larger and larger. UGH.
