[livejournal.com profile] lokte and I had adventures in San Francisco today. We started off going to see a free Britney Spears show. It was... interesting from a sociological standpoint, and it was being filmed for morning TV, so there were some cool camera rigs, but it had the worst sound I have ever heard, like we could not hear a single word anyone said or sang. She also looked like she has had some kind of whole-body injury, the way she was moving. We had fun, though, possibly because I had my iPod filled with pictures of Adam Lambert and Tommy Joe to look at while we waited between songs.

After that we went and had lunch at the fancy-schmancy food court at the Westfield, and then went and saw Sucker Punch. NOT A SPOILER: the women in that movie are INSANELY HOT.

Pretty much my absolute favourite thing about cinema in the last decade is the leaps and bounds wirework has taken. I love stunts, I love leaping, flying, kicking, sword-fighting stunts even more. If the people doing the leaping, flying, kicking and sword fighting are also wearing miniskirts and stockings, I am pretty much in heaven. THE LEVEL OF HOTNESS IN THIS MOVIE CANNOT BE OVERSTATED.

Also, Jena Malone. I LOVE HER.

I loved the story structure, too. The story exists on three levels: reality, surreality, and one of pure, wire-work fantasy. They are all gorgeous in a filthy, desaturated way, and the visuals often took my breath away, and not just in a high-kicks in short-skirts way. It was one of those movies where I didn't know what was going on for most of it, but that was okay. It wasn't confusing so much as anticipatory. It was in many ways like watching a supremely well-played video game.

Everything I was super excited about from the moment I saw the trailer delivered in spades.

I didn't love it unreservedly, though. The opening scene was exquisitely shot, and was told entirely without dialogue. I can't think of another time I've gotten such a complete story with nothing but pictures. It was really hard to watch, though. The story it told wasn't pretty.

None of the story told in this was pretty. Or very little of the story, anyway. In some wonderful ways it's about self-actualization and strong women, but it's also very much a story of women existing in a world where they have had their power taken away, and men are in charge and violent. And pretty vile. In many ways it's like watching a much, much prettier episode of Law and Order SVU.

It DEFINITELY fulfilled my need for some characters to write femslash about, though. I'm hoping that a plot bunny bites soon. alksjdfhalskdjfhasldkfjs I MENTIONED THE HOT, RIGHT?

I saw Sucker Punch this weekend as well. I'm still trying to work out what I exactly saw because the ending has me kind of questioning everything that came before that. hahahah. anyway. SO MANY HOT LADIES. I felt a little gross about perving over Vanessa Hudgens but then got over it. lol.

I'm hoping you get plot bunnies as well because ROCKET AND BLONDIE ARE MY FAVORITES. for instance. :)

I think I'm gonna need icons.

Yeah I am not totally sure I will ever feel confident I know what was going on in the literal reality sense. At the moment I think maybe the brothel is where baby went to escape the reality of the asylum, and (what I'm calling wire world) is where she went to find strength to do what she needed to do.

Soooooo interesting.

\o/ You have basically just confirmed all my reasons for going to see this: hot girls kicking ass, and also awesome stunts and pretty cinematography (and dragons).

I am continually amused at the difference between the mainstream reviews ("This film has MINISKIRTS and a BROTHEL and the women are YOUNG AND PRETTY and therefore it is horribly misogynist look at me I can recognise misogyny fuck yeah!") and fandom's ("This film is pretty damn awesome from a how-can-women-work-around-a-male-dominated-world POV and also they can hold their own in a fight oh yesss.") Fandom FTW.

Wow, I love your mainstream vs. fandom comment. I agree completely!

It definitely can be argued that the movie is trying to make a statement that women have to use their sexuality to survive in the world. It's also saying men think with their dicks and that makes them stupid. It does not serve as any kind of endorsement for heterosexuality for sure.

But the message of the movie is that the power you seek is inside you. Fight to survive. You have all the weapons you need. Find allies and work together. They are actually pretty heavy-handed with getting that across. To me there is a difference between showing that we live in a world that can be hateful and violent toward women in unrelenting ways, and saying hey, that's okay! The heroes of this movie are six women who fight to make their own and each others lives better, and the two men in the movie who try to give women agency in a world where they have none, and question the status quo.

Excellent! I'm very excited to see it. I'm actually thinking I might just go on my own this week. :) A treat for me.

I wish they would put out a 'wire world' edit. It definitely wasn't easy to watch a lot of the rest of it. ♥

Maybe someone will when the DVD comes out? You know, like how someone spliced together all the layers in Inception? Or...well that's really all I got. I had other movies references when I got here. Now? Not so much.

I know very little of Sucker Punch other than that the pictures on the cardboard stand ads at the cinema the other week were GORGEOUS. Hopefully I'll get to see it!

I am mostly here to express my delight at you taking [livejournal.com profile] lokte to see Britney. :DDD

I hope you get to see it too!

It was rather delightful. To be able to say we've done it, if nothing else :D :D
