I have been repeatedly heartbroken this week by the seemingly daily news reports of yet another gay young person committing suicide. Seth Walsh was only thirteen. So was Asher Brown. Billy Lucas was only fifteen. Tyler Clementi was just a freshman in college. All of them were bullied and harassed. Even more tragically, they are only a small sample of the kids who feel like they just can't live with being taunted for being queer. Usually these things don't make the news.

I've often felt helpless to do anything about the numbers of suicidal queer youth in this world. I have worked going in to schools talking to classes, and I have lived my life as out as possible, but there are only so many people I can come into contact with. And only a percentage of those people can relate to my story. But thanks to an internet video project started by Dan Savage, more people can get the word out to the kids who need to hear it most. The It Gets Better project is hosted on YouTube, and is a collection of videos made by people who know how hard it can be, and who know it does get better. I have only watched a small sampling, but so far I've seen vids from men and women, younger people and older people, singles and couples, people of a variety of cultural and racial backgrounds, Muslims and Christians, people from England and from Australia, people with money and people without. I hope that there is even more diversity represented than I have stumbled across. There can never be too many stories of hope.

Today my mom sent me a link to a video made by a whole group in San Francisco.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bnev14XfUjY&feature=player_embedded

It's moving, and it's wonderful, but it also made me think that we need videos like this from small towns, and towns where you don't see more same-sex couples than opposite-sex couples walking down the street holding hands. Not every kid in Indiana or Texas can envision a future where it's possible to move to San Francisco. It would be great if the project got collective videos from other cities. I hope very much that it does.

If you think this is a project that you could get involved with, I encourage you to do so. Make a video if you can. Get the word out. Boost the signal. Share it with the young people in your life. We need to stop losing our young people to hatred.

It is tremendously depressing. So much fear and hatred :(

{{hugs bb}} Like I said yesterday, I cannot believe this shit is still happening in the 21st century. I only wish I could do something more than enthusiastically spread the word (and donate to The Trevor Project).

It's shocking. And depressing. I need to think that it's going to get better in a more universal fashion.

and your icon made me nearly choke on my pb&j because I was holding it just like Adam :D

Thanks for the signal boost. Living in the Bay Area, it's easy to lose sight of the difficulties and challenges faced in less tolerant communities.

It is definitely hard. I really realized when I was travelling what a bubble I live in here. Even if school isn't easy, or your parents are homophobic, it's hard to live in the Bay Area and believe you are the only queer person in the world, I think.

I did! I posted about it in [livejournal.com profile] teamratbert. It's such a great message.

It made me cry too. It is awful that this is still happening. At the same time, I am glad it's finally in the news if it does have to happen. That way we can hopefully do something to make it stop.

It's so unbelievably awful that things like this keep happening. I have young kids and it scares me as to what kind of world they're growing up in.

It is awful. And I think all we can do is try to love our kids as best we can and teach them as well as we can that they are valuable no matter what. *hugs*

Do you have the original link for this? Want to send to my best friend.

I've added it to the post, and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bnev14XfUjY&feature=player_embedded that is so weird. Usually when you embed things, you can hit a button to get the embed codes and the link, but i had to wait all the way to the end on this one. And the link to all the videos on the project is this one (http://www.youtube.com/user/itgetsbetterproject).

It's such a fantastic idea. School can be such a damaging place for some of us.

School, especially junior high, was awful for me. I was tremendously lucky, because I had someone in my life to remind me that i was just passing through school and there was another side. I hope that these messages can be that for some kids who don't have it.

I just read a couple of the articles you linked to, to Justin and Matthew. Emphasized to them the importance of telling an adult if they EVER see/hear/suspect someone being bullied -- for any reason, but particularly this.

Do you mind if I link to your post, for signal-boosting?

Please do link, honey! And it's so good you can talk to your son and his friends about this. I wish the articles were better. Actually, the autostraddle one is good. The local news blogs don't always have the most compelling prose.

It's kind of cool, actually, that I have over time witnessed both boys cutting back on the use of "that's so gay" (and "that's so retarded") when simply meaning something stupid. And Matthew and Justin both joke around about how they're going to get married, etc. -- to me. (Well, I'm pretty sure Matthew's bi-sexual anyway, based on conversations we've had. But my point is they're both starting to GET that words can hurt.)

I also sent information about the project on to a couple of friends who have quite a few gay friends, one couple has a daughter now, thanks to surrogacy, and I'm hoping maybe they'll do videos, too.

I think this is a brilliant project, and it also reinforces why for those of us that can it is so important to be open about our sexuality everywhere we can be.

While I am certainly out because it makes MY life better for me to be so, that is not the only reason. I never forget how much easier it made life for me because there were people who were openly queer in my life, and I want/need to give that back, too. I hope very much that this project is helping the people it aims to, but I feel like it's helping one way or another.

I GET TO SEE YOU REALLY SOON. THIS MAKES ME HAPPY.

I totally approve of this post, and although I definitely want to watch the video, it may have to wait until it's not late at night and I'm not emotional/hormonal (as it goes). The fact that these young people felt like they had nowhere else to turn besides suicide is absolutely heartbreaking. I hope this message continues spread and that there is change so that these tragedies will end.

I keep thinking of "Be the change you want to see in the world" whenever I think of this project. It seems to be that at a very basic level.

word seems to be spreading, and now MTV is doing their own version of the project, but with famous people. It's awful that this is happening, but I am glad that it is finally getting some news coverage.
