Title: Waiting
Author: rivers_bend
Prompt: "She was waiting for it to shrivel up and die"
Words: 150
Rating: PG for theme
Summary: three reasons to wait.

She was waiting for it to shrivel up and die, her tail twitching, poking it with a tentative paw occasionally. Waiting for it to lash out one last time, to play some more, or just to go.

She was waiting for it to shrivel up and die. That last vestige of love, which she had thought would last forever. She let her mind poke at it, in weaker moments, the way a tongue finds a toothache. Just making sure it still hurts. She wished for a drill to get at the rot.

She was waiting for it to shrivel up and die. The drugs and radiation attacking the vestiges of the cancer, as they attacked her health, her self esteem, her life. The oncologists, the surgeons, the councilors, her family – they all told her she would be fine. But the cancer felt plump and alive. The cancer had her waiting.

River, a powerful and potent 150 words. A wrenching read, but good for you for exposing the taboo of the reality of disease and death.
