I managed to dl a virus that not only attacked my computer, but shut down all known methods of system restore. I have an external drive with a fairly recent backup, and have made a new backup of my wordfiles and some picture and music files, but if I try to restore from the partition it goes black and makes a horrible alarm noise, and all other methods have either been removed completely from the computer as far as I can tell, or tell me that access has been blocked.

The guy at Best Buy was nice but said it would be $200 plus take ten days, and then told me where to google, but google only tells me how to do things with the bits of my computer that the virus have eaten. I'm hoping one of mom's computer geek friends can do something.

Yes. Yes it does. and mom's friend is in Taiwan. Not helpful! D: But I am hoping someone else can help.

I use a fire wall/ anti- virus program from Kaspersky, (http://usa.kaspersky.com/products_services/internet-security.php?icid=50000028) it's one of the best out there.

best buy guy said that one was very good, but also not user-friendly, and so I should get Norton again. I'll look into it, though!

The place I used to work as a computer technician used Norton, I've been gone a few years but at the time it was seen as too bulky and merely adequate. I'd ask your mother to ask the person fixing your machine to advise you. Also, I stress that Norton is notorious for not recognising trojans. You need something that protects you from anti- viruses and trojans.

the guy who fixed it, and who works in tech support, said his boss recommends NOD32, so I am giving that a try, as it is apparently both robust and non-bulky. He also recommended Kaspersky, which I am going to try if I don't get on with this one.

oh, no I'm so sorry! I know the feeling, just went through something similar myself, I feel your pain. Unlike me, at least you backed up. I hope you can get it fixed soon.

Since my computer was stolen about 18 months ago and I lost a TON of stuff, I have been much better about backing up. I'm so sorry you had to go through the same! It's awful.

Ack, that's awful.

I really don't get virus writers. I mean, surely they're all intent computer nerds: don't they realise that the people they are impacting are their own (people like you and me!) who love their computers and have a lot of their lives on their computers (or via their computers). The only people they're really benefiting are the people who they probably don't like - Microsoft and the big companies. Oop, I just talked myself into a conspiracy theory there.

It's just such really bad karma on their part. I think a bird is probably shitting on their heads AS WE SPEAK.

And... good luck is heading your way. I can feel it in the auras of the world. :D

I was thinking about your good luck theory earlier and laughing ironically, as my phone charger stopped working, and when I went down to have it looked at, he said he wasn't sure it could be replaced for free, but he could sell me one for $35. I have been needing a car charger, so bought one of those instead, and then came home to call the company. "good luck indeed!" I scoffed.

BUT THEN. While I was looking for my paperwork, I found, in a pile of electrical stuff I'd thrown in a bag when I moved, AN LG PHONE CHARGER. I have NO IDEA where it came from, as this is the first LG phone I have ever owned. And also, even if you have the same brand, almost all chargers are different. BUT IT WORKS PERFECTLY.

SO YOU WERE RIGHT. And while my computer is still borked, and I cannot fix it, AT LEAST I HAVE A PHONE CHARGER.

Oh, that sucks, sweetie! And you're the second person on my flist today who has reported this same problem... Possibly the third this week, although one friend's computer is so far gone that they don't know exactly what caused the melt down. I do hope that whatever is going around is stopped soon! *hugs*

I had a computer problem not too long ago. Not sure if it's similar to yours, but basically my computer would shut down randomly and all of my anti-virus programs wouldn't work or even update. I couldn't even access any AV sites online. It was hell to fix and took more than a week. It ended up being a nasty piece of malware that stuck bits of itself all over. I was able to get it working, but even then I wasn't able to get everything off. So I definitely feel your pain. Sucks to have your PC out of commission. :( Good luck getting it fixed.
