I close my eyes and see in stuttering pictures. I always have. Hairbrush, hand, honey brown locks, curve of neck, Kaylee. So different from how the actual world goes by.

In the moment, sensation builds on smell and the world I see, and all of it fills me. In the moment, I can not separate out the smells of engine oil and rose soap that she found in that ridiculous little shop the last time we were on a semi-civilized world. In the moment, the silk of her hair through my fingers is one with the silk of the wooden brush handle, one with the silk of her skin. In the moment, the fabric of her blends into the fabric of my shuttle and she is part of it. Part of me.

Once she is gone, back to her love, her Serenity, I can only close my eyes. Can only see in stuttering pictures. Hairbrush, hand, honey brown locks, curve of neck, joy.

There are many kinds of love in this universe. I have seen them all. And when I am alone I close my eyes. My fingers can remember the moment, but I can only see in stuttering pictures.

I loved writing this. much more about the words than the story, and sometimes that is really fun. I am glad you thought it worked :)

I write anything that's asked of me as long as I've seen the source show, but Inara/Kaylee was all for me. I nearly wore out my dvd watching the bit where she brushes kaylee's hair. so so so beautiful! and the look on Inarra's and Kaylee's faces when they see eachother all dolled up for the ball... *goes all firefly fangirly, getting strange looks from mother*

My friend made me write Mal/Inara and Simon/Kaylee for her birthday. The Mal/Inara was quite good, but I will still never be clean again.

Kaylee/Inara is lovely, and kinda canon too, which makes a nice change.

Oh, this is beautiful, so poetic. I immediately knew the exact moment that Inara was thinking about, and it was indeed a sweet, lovely moment between them (until Mal busted in and ruined it - typical!) I love the engine oil and ridiculous rose soap juxtaposition - that's so Kaylee.

I also love how the first time Inara lists the series of snapshots, she uses the word "Kaylee" as the last image, but in the second repetition, she uses the word "joy." Because, yes, those two words mean the same thing.

Thank you!! this is one of my more favourite things I've written, and i am so happy that you got the Kaylee/Joy thing!

I love writing cannon expansion pieces that throw you into the show and then let you look behind the camera and the editing.

Oh, yes, I love those little glimpses into the characters' heads too. Which reminds me, I meant to ask, what was the inspiration for having Inara think in a series of "stuttering pictures"? (lovely phrase, by the way.) Your fic seems to imply that she always perceives or remembers that way, and it's such an interesting concept and I was curious what inspired that.
