So I did, indeed, go to see Star Trek today. And I absolutely, hands down, with glee in my heart, loved it.
Even though it had me crying before the title card. Apparently my complete inability to have any sort of connection with Cameron is more about Cameron than Jennifer Morrison. That, or I continue to be a complete sucker for tragic stories involving babies.
It was funny, and really good looking, compelling, brilliantly cast, and exciting. I thought the young James Kirk was horrible, but young Spock was CREEPILY like Zachary Quinto, and brilliant. Quinto and Nimoy on screen together didn't at all disrupt the illusion that the former was the latter's younger self. I think the most amazing casting was Urban, though. I will admit to not having been a fan of the original series, but I was a fan of all the original films, and there was something about him that I actually found my self having a freaky sense of not knowing if I was watching old "Bones" or new one. It's not so much that he looks just like Kelley, but he definitely seemed to have done his homework.
I loved the skydiving scene; it was much more interesting than it looked on the trailer, and I was pretty interested in it then :) I thought the 'in' jokes were almost overdone, but they got a hearty laugh from the whole theater every time, including me, so I think the reality is that they were pitched perfectly. I was worried, REALLY worried, that they were going to destroy the Golden Gate bridge, and I would have had to cry again, because I cannot bear when they break the Golden Gate bridge. I actually did start crying in X3 when they uprooted it. A fact which I am somewhat ashamed of, and yet, here, I tell you about it.
I was surprised to find the Kirk/Spock much slashier when Nimoy was on screen than when Quinto was.
I really really want to see it again.

Karl Urban was wonderful! And boyhood!Spock was adorable.
That said, I was mainly there for Simon Pegg. *g*

Boyhood Spock was so awesome. I just couldn't get over how well cast this movie was.

I thought of you when they didn't destroy the Golden Gate bridge, just so you know.
I LOVED that old!Spock scene in the cave... they did such an amazing job of conveying the conundrum of the fact that Spock has experienced a lifetime of friendship (and MORE than friendship, even if the slash goggles aren't on) with this man and knows/recognizes/feels so much more looking at him than this young, different Kirk can even fathom.

And yes. Cave scene. AMAZING. I wanted to cling to it and slow it down and watch again and again. I need this on DVD like burning.

AMEN!!! I might go see it again tonight. Because who needs to finish final exams when there is STAR TREK to be re-experienced! *flails* I can NOT get over how GOOD it was! Like, if I go tonight I'm dragging three non-Trekkie friends with me and am COMPLETELY CONFIDENT that they will adore it! THAT GOOD.
The time paradox/AU thing was campy and BRILLIANT and so perfectly Star Trek I can't even stand it. I didn't go into it expecting them to EXLAIN why things were different - I just figured it would be a new take on the world/story/characters and that would be that. I should never have doubted! Because it's Star Trek, and you can do whatever the hell you WANT where time travel is involved!

Interesting you should say that about the slash - I saw the beginnings of it with ZacharySpock and Kirk, but you're right that it was nothing on the original. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens there in the next film.
I was quite surprised that they didn't destroy the Golden Gate bridge, because it really looked as if the drill was going to fall on it. I'm with you on being pleased that they didn't, though - don't know why but that bridge is just something special.

I totally agree about the slash between old!Spock and new!Kirk, but definite potential towards the end with new!Spock. I absolutley loved all the cast, even Uhura on second viewing (the whole Uhura/Spock thing threw me too much the first time round to properly appreciate it). Also second time round made me love young!Spock even more, he was jsut adorable and so much like Zachary Quinto. I can't pick a favorite although I might be leaning towards Kirk. Or Spock. Or Chekov (who stole every scene he was in). Or Bones just for the whole 'hands' thing. In fact, I loved them all!
Oh, and I see what you mean about Jennifer Morrison, I really liked her in this but she drives me up the wall in House. And I loved Daddy Kirk, possibly in part because I am a big Home and Away fan.
EDITED to add more thoughts!
