MONTPELIER, Vt. – Vermont has become the fourth state to legalize gay marriage — and the first to do so with a legislature's vote.

The Legislature voted Tuesday to override Gov. Jim Douglas' veto of a bill allowing gays and lesbians to marry. The vote was 23-5 to override in the state Senate and 100-49 to override in the House.

and also,

thank you [livejournal.com profile] deelaundry and [livejournal.com profile] deirdre_c for the heads up.

ETA and now Washington DC, too, with the recognizing marriages from outside the district. \o/

Whooo-hoooo! *happy dances*

(Of course, anyone want to bet how long it takes some conservative pundit to use the phrase "domino effect"?)

Bring on the Domino Effect! That is all I can say. I am hoping that these decisions will help sway the CA Supreme Court to overturn Prop 8.

It still boggles my mind that a state like California, of all places, could pass Prop 8 to begin with. Then again, I guess that just goes to show the power of propaganda and the general unwillingness of some people to embrace change.

*hugs* to you and another big WHOOOO-HOOOO!

Do you think this will help sway the CA Supreme Court at all?

I AM SO EXCITED!

and also, I saw you the other night at CCA, but got ridiculously too shy to come and introduce myself. For which I apologise, because it would have been awesome to actually say HI, and to not be a lame-o stalker

It might sway our Court, but as the decision comes from the legislature, chances are that if they're persuaded by anything it'll be the decisions of Iowa or Massachusetts or Connecticut. But I don't really think the Court will be, at least not insofar as the legal discussion goes (what they personally feel is so often a different matter); this trial of Prop. 8 has been construed as such a narrow legal question (the California amendment process) as opposed to last March (broad fundamental rights) that I just really don't know. I'm terrified that the Court, while recognizing the marriages up until Nov. 4 as legal, will validate Prop. 8.

But Vermont is fantastic, and it may prove persuasive. I hope it does, so, so much.

I didn't even know you were there! That's so awesome! Next time we are somewhere together, you should come say hi!

The waiting for the court decision is agony. But in the mean time, it seems the other states are determined to make me happy!

I was sitting two rows behind you, so couldn't help but overhear all the discussion about who seats were being saved for, and the squeals of greetings, so I figured it was you. But I will try to do better next time about actually saying, hi!

I think it's by the second week of June that they have to issue a decision - I think that's the outside of the 90-day period.

We were kind of loud, I think. Whoops! But yeah, next time come over and say hello if you want.

Sorry to butt in... from what I've read it's looking like that will be the case OR that the courts will find a legal loop hole to call for a do over. The argument that the change constituted a "revision" to the state constitution, thus requiring a two-thirds vote from the legislature prior to being put forth to voters, is a weak one at best. And as you mentioned, it is such a narrow legal question being decided that the outlook isn't looking very optimistic. That said, the chances of the Prop 8 being made retroactive are slim to none.

Ugh, didn't mean to be such a downer amongst so much happier news. PLEASE JUST IGNORE ME *facepalm*

What a wonderful "Take That" to all those who supported Prop 8. This is just how the response to that travesty should go. Those who oppose gay marriage can spend tons of money for one state, and the rest will just quietly go about doing the right thing. (and hopefully Cali will renounce) *nods*

I hope this comment makes sense, my glee was speaking faster than my fingers type.

One by one, the people will change. And we'll change the world with us.

Btw, J&J should be glad they live as roommates in Vancouver, and not in Finland.
You see, as far as the law's concerned, if two (unrelated, of age, etc.) persons share an apartment over here, they're a couple unless they prove that they're not. No matter the gender.

So is it not common for like college students to share an apartment to save money? I know almost no one who doesn't have either a spouse or a housemate (or several)

It is. It's just a curious bit of legislation, that I think people haven't thought through completely. But at least they changed it to include all genders a while back.
