Subject line courtesy of the man in front of me in the queue who was so excited that he couldn't remember the title, nor figure that the ticket seller would probably know what he meant if he'd just said "Indy". *g*

Minor casting spoilers (none that might be relevant to any plot points) and reactiony, but no film spoilers,

First, I would like Cate Blanchette to be in everything please. Especially things with Shia. For they are AWESOME together. I can kind of imagine him fangirling all over her on the set, but in a way he thinks is subtle, and her wanting to pet him because he's so adorable. Not that I actually think this happened, but I like to pretend *g*

I want to go back and watch the earlier ones now, but from what I remember, they did a much better job of evoking the 50s for this one than they did the 30s/40s/20s in the others. At the same time, they had kick-ass women and a fairly modern sensibility about gender roles. You know, for an action-adventure movie. You have to leave your disbelief at the door, or the parking lot if possible, but that isn't unexpected. It had National Treasure levels of WTFery at times, but while everyone involved in NT seemed aware of that, I kind of got the feeling that this was taken a bit more seriously. It wasn't enough to harsh my squee, but I really do recommend not looking for logic or for obeisance to be paid to any laws of physics.

There are some fantastic stunts, some great model work (and some not so great), and the actors have great chemistry. Shia is ridiculously hot/cute/pretty. There are in-jokes, joke-jokes, and Cate cracked me up on more than one occasion. It's half sequel, half homage. But it's been YEARS since I saw any of the others, and I did just fine.

It's not the best film I've seen of the genre, but I wasn't disappointed, and if the 'rents or a friend wants to go and see it, I'd go again.

As to the trailers... anyone out there have an opinion on whether I would need to see Hellboy in order to enjoy Hellboy II? And is Hellboy any good? I have gone from having no desire to see Hancock to having lots. I'm glad the new Star Wars movie is animated. Unless that was an ad for a video game. It was really rather hard to tell. The pixar robot movie looks cute. If I NEVER see another preview for Kung Fu Panda it will be too soon.

I had obscene amounts of love for the first Hellboy movie. There are too many tentacles and some moments of cheese, but wow, what absolutely stunning visual design, and what an imaginative world it creates.

Also, it would cross over really well with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Just sayin'.

I shall add Hellboy to my netflix queue as soon as the site stops telling me that it's suffering difficulties. The only people I knew who saw it were huge comics geeks and they hated it, so I never bothered. But the trailer for the new one looks AMAZING.

They really translated the visual design of the comics to the screen very well, with the primary colors and deep blacks that the original art has, but WTFever comic geeks *g*.

I should watch the most recent trailer for the new one. I saw a really short one that looked like it had a bunch of Lucius Malfoy's less hot brothers in it.

Lucius Malfoy's less hot brothers in it.

HAHAHAHA omg, YES! It does look like that. I was completely taken by the look of it, and I do love Selma Blair, and the effects looked really well done, and I can't think of a single comic book movie I didn't like. (though there are a couple batman ones I didn't see)

*averts eyes from indy spoilers* :D

I loved Hellboy - it got a lot of stick and it's kinda dopey but has (i think) massive amounts of charm)

no probs - i haven't seen an ad for the second one yet, but i'm hoping to see either iron man or indy this weekend and am being forced to see sex in the city next week - so i'm hoping i'll get to see an ad soon!

I cannot WAIT to see the new indy movie!!!!!!!!!!! My fav movies of all time, I kid you not. I can word for word them to you, srsly.

I have seen hellboy a couple times. Its pretty good. Wild special effects, strange creatures, comic book knowlege not necessary to enjoy. I wouldn't see the sequel in the theater but I'd watch it.

I am SOOO sick of kung-fu panda commercials...oy! enough already.

Wait...what new Star Wars movie?

This new Star Wars movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1185834/). Though honestly, I had no clue if it was a video game or a film. Only when I looked on imdb did I have a clue.

I definitely need to see the old Indy films again.

I love Hellboy. Even have it on DVD. It doesn't take itself seriously, and so works really well. Also, it has lots of cute kittens.

sounds like I definitely need to see it. I do tend to love films like that. *will watch*

and ??? kittens? *g*

Hellboy just really loves his kittens. Tentacle monster fight + Box of kittens = Awesome!

I love Hellboy! *bounces* I don't own it, but I've seen it many times. It's got Ron Perlman, and he is without a doubt the sexiest 58-year-old with extremely unconventional features I have ever seen. LOL! Also, I adore Selma Blair.

Awesome! I'm going to see this Indiana Jones... I was too young when the others were released to appreciate them properly. And now that you've warned me, I will be sure to go in expecting potential WTFery of all sorts. I'm sure I'll enjoy it! :D

Ron Perlman is bizarre and awesome. and I too love Selma.

heee, yes. go see it! at one point I started going, but how come the... with the... and... and then stopped myself and went back to just being happy. My expectations for laws of physics are less than my expectations for consistent characterization, and they do a good job with that.

Star Wars is my earliest film going memory, but Raiders is right in there (along with Tootsie). And I remember Last Crusade was one of the first movies I went to with a friend driving. Can't believe it was that long ago.

posted by [identity profile] lila-blue-b.livejournal.com at 10:21pm on 22/05/2008
I will! :D *thumbs up for consistent characterization*

Yeah, I never watched any of the Indy movies because when I was about 7 years old, I was at a Halloween party and the older kids were watching Temple of Doom and scared me half-to-death... So after that I just never made it a priority. I'm sure I'd probably like them if I saw them now.

I love Hellboy, I've seen it about three times now. It's DUMB. But it's got all the ingredients for a great film: evil Nazis who want to open up the door to Hell (because they're evil!), a blue guy with gills who reads underwater, kitties in peril, and a big red guy who smokes cigars and files off his horns in order to fit in. The art is pretty cool, but it's just one of those films that you can watch again and again because it's that much fun. :D

I'll add my vote to the Hellboy yayfest! It is wonderful!! Ron Perlman is awesome! (BTW, have you seen Beauty and the Beast the TV series? OH and he has that adorable small role in Happy, Texas.)

i've added it to my queue. i'm excited!

I never saw the Beauty and the Beast TV show, thouigh I remember the ads. Oh, I love Happy, Texas. Must watch that again too at some point.

Have you ever seen City of Lost Children (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112682/)?

It's a beautiful, creepy French movie (done by the guy who did Delicatessen and Amelie) and Ron Perlman is f'ing brilliant in it. I remember when I first saw it, I called my sister to tell her she *had* to see it, and it turns out that she was just about to call me to tell *me* that I had to see it. Pretty weird.

Hellboy is great fun. And it has one the sexiest baddies ever - the Bondage Nazi! It's worth it just for him! Sorry, I haven't read the comics so I don't know the character's real name. He'll always be the Bondage Nazi to me *sigh*

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 02:51pm on 23/05/2008
Hehe! I've put it in my netflix queue. I shall look out for the Bondage Nazi.

I LOVE Hellboy! Although you probably won't need to see it before Hellboy 2

I shall watch anyway, since my flist has so much love for it. *g*

I thought it was just okay, but Cate Blanchett was amazing (and I've never thought her particularly special in anything before). And word to the laws of physics - I know I'm too picky, but the number of times I thought 'okay, no...' went way over the top, and this is from a long-time watcher of Schwarzenegger movies XD

I love love love Cate, though will admit that part of that is because I just love to look at her. I only had to actively stuff down my incredulity once, but I had a running litany of no thinking, no thinking going on. Cate and Shia were so much fun, and I'm a total ho for stunts *g*

Hellboy is fabulous!

Ron Perlman is great in whatever he does, and it has a wonderful element of "hey, we're based on a comic book, so let's please not try to take ourselves too seriously."

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 02:55pm on 23/05/2008
I do adore Ron. And I'm so glad so many on my flist are recommending the film, because OMG the sequel looks fantastic fun. It's in my queue, to be watched after my next round of tv shows discs :D

Hot Shia action! I was in heaven! *squees with you*

I can't stop thinking about him fawning over Cate on set now. Look what you've done to me with your evil mind!!
