Subject line courtesy of the man in front of me in the queue who was so excited that he couldn't remember the title, nor figure that the ticket seller would probably know what he meant if he'd just said "Indy". *g*
Minor casting spoilers (none that might be relevant to any plot points) and reactiony, but no film spoilers,
First, I would like Cate Blanchette to be in everything please. Especially things with Shia. For they are AWESOME together. I can kind of imagine him fangirling all over her on the set, but in a way he thinks is subtle, and her wanting to pet him because he's so adorable. Not that I actually think this happened, but I like to pretend *g*
I want to go back and watch the earlier ones now, but from what I remember, they did a much better job of evoking the 50s for this one than they did the 30s/40s/20s in the others. At the same time, they had kick-ass women and a fairly modern sensibility about gender roles. You know, for an action-adventure movie. You have to leave your disbelief at the door, or the parking lot if possible, but that isn't unexpected. It had National Treasure levels of WTFery at times, but while everyone involved in NT seemed aware of that, I kind of got the feeling that this was taken a bit more seriously. It wasn't enough to harsh my squee, but I really do recommend not looking for logic or for obeisance to be paid to any laws of physics.
There are some fantastic stunts, some great model work (and some not so great), and the actors have great chemistry. Shia is ridiculously hot/cute/pretty. There are in-jokes, joke-jokes, and Cate cracked me up on more than one occasion. It's half sequel, half homage. But it's been YEARS since I saw any of the others, and I did just fine.
It's not the best film I've seen of the genre, but I wasn't disappointed, and if the 'rents or a friend wants to go and see it, I'd go again.
As to the trailers... anyone out there have an opinion on whether I would need to see Hellboy in order to enjoy Hellboy II? And is Hellboy any good? I have gone from having no desire to see Hancock to having lots. I'm glad the new Star Wars movie is animated. Unless that was an ad for a video game. It was really rather hard to tell. The pixar robot movie looks cute. If I NEVER see another preview for Kung Fu Panda it will be too soon.

Also, it would cross over really well with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Just sayin'.

I should watch the most recent trailer for the new one. I saw a really short one that looked like it had a bunch of Lucius Malfoy's less hot brothers in it.

HAHAHAHA omg, YES! It does look like that. I was completely taken by the look of it, and I do love Selma Blair, and the effects looked really well done, and I can't think of a single comic book movie I didn't like. (though there are a couple batman ones I didn't see)

I loved Hellboy - it got a lot of stick and it's kinda dopey but has (i think) massive amounts of charm)

I have seen hellboy a couple times. Its pretty good. Wild special effects, strange creatures, comic book knowlege not necessary to enjoy. I wouldn't see the sequel in the theater but I'd watch it.
I am SOOO sick of kung-fu panda commercials...oy! enough already.
Wait...what new Star Wars movie?

I definitely need to see the old Indy films again.

Awesome! I'm going to see this Indiana Jones... I was too young when the others were released to appreciate them properly. And now that you've warned me, I will be sure to go in expecting potential WTFery of all sorts. I'm sure I'll enjoy it! :D

heee, yes. go see it! at one point I started going, but how come the... with the... and... and then stopped myself and went back to just being happy. My expectations for laws of physics are less than my expectations for consistent characterization, and they do a good job with that.
Star Wars is my earliest film going memory, but Raiders is right in there (along with Tootsie). And I remember Last Crusade was one of the first movies I went to with a friend driving. Can't believe it was that long ago.

Yeah, I never watched any of the Indy movies because when I was about 7 years old, I was at a Halloween party and the older kids were watching Temple of Doom and scared me half-to-death... So after that I just never made it a priority. I'm sure I'd probably like them if I saw them now.

It's a beautiful, creepy French movie (done by the guy who did Delicatessen and Amelie) and Ron Perlman is f'ing brilliant in it. I remember when I first saw it, I called my sister to tell her she *had* to see it, and it turns out that she was just about to call me to tell *me* that I had to see it. Pretty weird.

Ron Perlman is great in whatever he does, and it has a wonderful element of "hey, we're based on a comic book, so let's please not try to take ourselves too seriously."

I can't stop thinking about him fawning over Cate on set now. Look what you've done to me with your evil mind!!
