So. I just watched Brick, figuring if I couldn't sleep or do homework or write cos my head was all fucked up, I might as well watch a movie. That is what I had.

Short review: Huh.

Slightly longer review: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a god. Props to Rian Johnson (the writer/director) for his vision (even though if your name is Ryan, I don't see any reason not to spell it that way). Someone in charge of what made it to the screen has a serious thing about shoes. I approve.

Longer still and possibly a little spoilery review:
I am not well versed in the Noir genre. My brain is not set up to parse information handed to me that way very quickly. Especially today perhaps.

Or maybe that's the point. Because by the end I did know what was going on, and maybe I just wasn't meant to before that. As I said, not versed in the genre.

It was a really odd idea for a film. like a totally unexpected crossover fic that you're sure isn't going to work until it does. It wasn't entirely un-reminiscent of The Hole, but was also totally different. (Did I mention yet that I'm having trouble making sense today?) There was high school and violence and creepiness and a little confusion though.

It managed to feel like a really bloody movie with almost no actual blood on the screen. Watching J G-L get knocked down and knocked down and knocked the fuck down and keep getting up was crazy. Good though.

I really wanted to tangle my fingers in his hair.

okay, so the review turned out not spoilery, but I left the cut cos there's a little picture under there.

I'd love to know if anyone else has seen this, and what you thought.

Not seen, but now I want to.

And naturally I am in agreement re J G-L.

Cheers, love.

mmmmm indian head massage. *wants*

I think you'd love it. I watched it, of course, due to my J love. and it's totally worth it for that even if you hated everything else about it.

I liked Brick A Lot. I AM really verse in Noir; it's about fully HALF of film school from what I saw! I thought it was clever, odd, and a fun movie. And JGL was really fantastic.

It was clever and odd and fun (in a *ouch* sort of way). It did make me wish I'd seen some of what it was so obviously referencing re: style though.

He was amazing, wasn't he? I mean, he always is, but wow.

omg, yes yes yes to everything you said. I was so baffled when I saw it. It was recommended to me by a friend who shared my love for Joseph and it reminded me of why I loved him so much but I seriously don't know what happened. Although I understand the main plot points - I just couldn't completely grasp how they all came together. I think it was kind of like Donnie Darko in the way that I would have to watch it a few times to fully understand it, but it isn't the kind of movie that I would want to see again because it was just so dark.

I really wanted to tangle my fingers in his hair.

guh yes.

Next on your agenda if you haven't seen it already: The Lookout!!! :D it's one of his more recent movies. It is fantastic. And Jeff Daniels is wonderful in it - I adore him. Him + Joseph = SO CUTE.

*licks you*

The Lookout is about 4 down in my queue on netflix. so it should be here soon.

You found that darker than Donnie Darko? I guess it was kind of more harshly real. DD totally makes me cry though. and scares me.

I might want to watch this again, but not soon.

Brick is one of my favourite movies of recent years. it's so clever, beautiful and messed up, and it really does stretch your brain trying to figure out WTF they are all talking about.

And of course you know I love the JGL! He is amazing.

He is totally amazing. And even moreso in this than usual. And yours is a perfect description of the film!

I haven't seen it, but would like to, only if to watch Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his incredible acting.

It's definitely worth it for his performance. Breathtaking. And the cinematography is fascinating too.

I've seen 'Brick' a couple of times. It took me two viewings to *really* get the film :)

I think Joseph is fantastic (as always) and I thought it stayed true to its 'noir' roots. It came together in the end. A very good effort on the part of the witer/director.

And some scary performances.

It definitely felt like if I were to watch again I'd be able to focus more on things and get a better whole picture. I do think I'm going to leave it a bit though.

It was a great effort on Rian's part. It felt like an ode to film making. And oh yeah, SUPER scary performances.
