I'm really not even sure that I can make a coherent reactionary post to this film. I can start with simple. Joseph Gordon-Levitt fucking kills me. I have this place in my heart that wants him to be Cameron from 10 Things, heart on his sleeve and his biggest problem getting the girl. When he's hurting or violent or being assaulted (not in reference to this film BTW) it just hurts. A hell of a lot.

I like Ryan Phillipe just fine, but he didn't really sell me on 'from Texas' all that well. There is just something tremendously East Coast about him to me. And not just his role in Cruel Intentions. I thought Abbie Cornish was more convincing and she grew up in Australia. Actually, that makes sense, now I think on it. On the subject of Abbie, she probably put in the best performance, in my opinion.

I'm so glad [livejournal.com profile] raggedann reminded me to pop some kleenex in my purse. I started crying about 5 minutes in and cried off and on for the rest of the movie. Not Fried Green Tomato level sobbing, but definite blotting required.

So, one thing. WHAT THE FUCK IS OUR GOVERNMENT DOING? That's always been my opinion; I am extremely anti-war, anti-solving conflicts with guns, anti-fighting. What I am not, is anti-the men and women who are trying to do their jobs to the best of their ability. This is a pretty brutal film. But, it's also clearly come out of Hollywood, and I'm gonna say it didn't escape the 'let's not be too hard on the government/god bless America' hype that abides. I hoped for an ending that left me more satisfied. Or, rather, less 'satisfied'. I feel like suits had their say about the ending, which was rather tied up with a (yellow) bow.

i was not surprised to see at the end that this was made by the woman who made Boys Don't Cry

I don't like the sound of the ending, but I agree with you that I am definitely not anti the men and women serving. It's all just such a bullshit shame. <3

I'm just not sure the ending served either the story or the story telling very well. I tire of 'neat' endings. especially to such a messy story as this had to be. I think you should see the movie though.

So..is it a 'see at the cinema' movie, or a 'rent it on DVD' movie, River? Or 'give it a miss'?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is such a brilliant actor. (Because it cannot be stated too often!)

There is nothing about it that must be seen on a big screen, and some of the more graphic scenes, one might prefer to see small. Though, having said that, you would probably lose a good portion of the impact of the war seeing it small. It's good. And worth seeing. It's depressing, and sad and it kind of made me want to march fucking George W into a sniper's nest. I don't recommend it for a fragile day, for sure.

D:
War is evil. I truly hate this damn War, so, so much. I get really upset even thinking about it - which isn't the most common occurrence, me getting emotional like that. I really do think I'm going to have to wait until I can really steel and brace myself before seeing movies like this. Hits too close to home. :(

I didn't actually know it was gonna hit me as hard as it did. I had no idea what to expect going in as I'd not seen a trailer or read anything about it other than the poster. My only actual personal connection is an ex colleague whose son is over there. Watching the mother in this film just broke my heart for Ros.

Yeah. I have a cousin who enlisted on a whim/to get away from his family (which is an understandable wish) at 18 and was deployed immediately to Afghanistan...We got a few letters from him that scared the shit out of me, and then he just. stopped writing. We haven't heard from him for about a year now. No idea why.
And I have a few friends from high school in the military, one in Iraq and the others in different non-war zone areas. I'm obviously very proud of all of them, but. I just...yeah. I really, really hate that they even have to be risking their lives. :/

I really love Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Such an intelligent and sensitive actor. I can't wait to see it.

I've loved him since 3rd Rock, and I just adore 10 things, but it was Mysterious Skin that made me realize how much he kills me. I have some of his other recent films on backlog on my netflix list. After yesterday I've moved some up.

Not Fried Green Tomato level sobbing, but definite blotting required. Oh, I am drawing a gazillion tiny hearts around you right now, you bee charmer! (although I confess to being a bigger fan of the book)

And while I haven't seen stop-loss, JGL -- yes, yes, yes.

Oh, god. I was crying so hard that my 'friends' actually wouldn't walk with me when we were leaving the theatre and called me pathetic and stupid. All of which might lead you to think I'm much younger than I am, but it's not true. We were actually 19/20 at the time.

There are ways I'm a bigger fan of the book, for sure, but the death is so underplayed there that it doesn't make me cry nearly so much. So for pure manipulative tear-jerking, It's the film every time.
