I'm really not even sure that I can make a coherent reactionary post to this film. I can start with simple. Joseph Gordon-Levitt fucking kills me. I have this place in my heart that wants him to be Cameron from 10 Things, heart on his sleeve and his biggest problem getting the girl. When he's hurting or violent or being assaulted (not in reference to this film BTW) it just hurts. A hell of a lot.
I like Ryan Phillipe just fine, but he didn't really sell me on 'from Texas' all that well. There is just something tremendously East Coast about him to me. And not just his role in Cruel Intentions. I thought Abbie Cornish was more convincing and she grew up in Australia. Actually, that makes sense, now I think on it. On the subject of Abbie, she probably put in the best performance, in my opinion.
I'm so glad
So, one thing. WHAT THE FUCK IS OUR GOVERNMENT DOING? That's always been my opinion; I am extremely anti-war, anti-solving conflicts with guns, anti-fighting. What I am not, is anti-the men and women who are trying to do their jobs to the best of their ability. This is a pretty brutal film. But, it's also clearly come out of Hollywood, and I'm gonna say it didn't escape the 'let's not be too hard on the government/god bless America' hype that abides. I hoped for an ending that left me more satisfied. Or, rather, less 'satisfied'. I feel like suits had their say about the ending, which was rather tied up with a (yellow) bow.
i was not surprised to see at the end that this was made by the woman who made Boys Don't Cry

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is such a brilliant actor. (Because it cannot be stated too often!)

War is evil. I truly hate this damn War, so, so much. I get really upset even thinking about it - which isn't the most common occurrence, me getting emotional like that. I really do think I'm going to have to wait until I can really steel and brace myself before seeing movies like this. Hits too close to home. :(

And I have a few friends from high school in the military, one in Iraq and the others in different non-war zone areas. I'm obviously very proud of all of them, but. I just...yeah. I really, really hate that they even have to be risking their lives. :/

And while I haven't seen stop-loss, JGL -- yes, yes, yes.

There are ways I'm a bigger fan of the book, for sure, but the death is so underplayed there that it doesn't make me cry nearly so much. So for pure manipulative tear-jerking, It's the film every time.
