Except that it does kind of make sense of the Trickster's actions, if for some reason he is on Ruby's side and trying to make Sam a man who would have gone with Ruby's plan and not listen to Dean…

The more I think about it, the more pissed off I am feeling about the fact that they took someone who, in my opinion, was written as a 2D stereotype, made him fully formed, and then killed him off. Maybe I need to re-watch the other ep he was in besides Nightshifter, and see if he's more 3D there. I don't remember really having an opinion on him last season. But on this watch of NS, he just came on the scene like unadulterated central casting for pig-headed FBI guy. And carried that on in the beginning of this episode too.

Now. I do understand the need for a starting point if you want a character to change. I do. I just think they could have given him a better starting point. Because his ending point? Dude! He processed, dealt, and came up shooting. He suddenly had layers. He had funny. And chemistry. And potential as a hunter! But all for naught, cos now he's dead. And the really sad thing is, I feel like I shouldn't be surprised. Cos on this show (and how many others?), being a non-white male is not good for your life expectancy.

I am glad Ruby is finally getting some character too. Though why they couldn't give us some a little earlier in the season I'm not sure.
