Oh, Ben Foster, how many years have I loved you????? Seven years. And OMG, I never knew how justified that love was, until now.

First, I really liked the film. A lot. But, DUDE! Men are fucking stupid. The things they prioritize, I swear.

The cast in this was stupendous. The aforementioned Ben just blew me away. He was so much rugged slashy love. I'm used to him playing kind of wimpy and gay and emo. Well, he kept the gay, though I'm not sure how specifically that was intended in the script, but lost ALL the wimpy. I just was in awe, every time he was on screen.

Christian was powerful and lived in his character as always. Peter Fonda reined in his usual scenery-chewing tendencies, or possibly just the scenery was so big you didn't notice. Gretchen Mol was beautiful and understated, Russell was Russell. I'm not really that big a fan, but he is good in things like this. The boy who played Christian's son is going to be one to watch, I think. He gave me shivers a few times, and seems mature beyond his years. He's also quite pretty. But, you know, sixteen, so not that pretty. He reminds me of a young Christian Slater, but without the attitude.

The stunts were really well done, they made great use of the locations, and the costumes felt real rather than the western costume look you sometimes see.

I'm also enjoying the extras on the DVDs.

I think maybe I need to watch some more Westerns. I love The Quick and the Dead and Deadwood, I quite like the Young Guns movies. Anyone have suggestions? The only other one I've seen is High Noon.

Unforgiven is a must-see. Pale Rider is amazing and powerful. The Long Riders has a stellar cast and a great storyline. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is fantastic, of course.

And if you haven't read it and you're in a Western mood, then you MUST read the SPN fanfic called "Strangers in Gilead," by corvus-imbrifer. Here's the link: http://www.imbrium.net/storage/SIG/SIG00.html

It's long, luscious, and beautifully written. OMG. Let me know what you think if/when you do read it. It will satisfy your desire for Westerns and then some!

Thank you for the link, and the recs. I shall have to check some of those out. I have seen Butch and Sundance and hated it, but it has to be said, I was probably only 7 or 8 at the time. found it boring. I'll have to try it again as an adult.

Oh, and I don't know if you're a Firefly fan or not, but, of course, that whole thing is a space Western and just *so* amazing. *sighs*

Oh, yes. I've watched some eps as many as 6 times, and all at least twice. And Serenity I saw 4 times at the cinema alone. So I'm well versed in that.

*loves like pie*

And avoid 'Billy Two Hats' at all costs.

I've seen it twice, because I couldn't be arsed to get off the sofa and turn it off on both occasions.

The only thing I can recall is that the ending is utterly unsatisfying, and the title, which is every kind of hilarious.

And lends itself perfectly to 'Billy No Mates' parodies.

I can't even remember if he has two hats...

There is no correlation between this comment and the three glasses of red wine and several rum truffles that I have consumed this evening.

None at all.

Though there really IS a film called Billy Two Hats, that much I can tell ee.

Well I recommend any of the Tommy Lee Jones 'new westerns' The Missing, Three Burials (but I think you've seen those two anyway) The Proposition (which again I think you've seen) and not forgetting Firefly!

Classic Clint ones are also unmissible The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, Fist Full of... and my Leone favourite Once Upon a Time in the West. Also I know it's cheesy but you can't go wrong with The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance! xx

I haven't actually seen any of those, firefly apart, of course. I'll have to check them out.

Well I highly recommend the first three films then. The Missing is wonderful and terrifying, Three Burials is downright strange (but brilliant) and The Proposition is excellent, if a little brutal.

Now is the perfect time to get into Westerns with all the modern ones like Jessie James coming out!

That whole MOVIE was big with the slashy love! Come on, Bale and Crowe, alone in the BRIDAL suite. Crowe killing his main man for killing Bale? That's LOVE baby.

Now, wouldn't this make a great J2 AU??? See? What I was saying!

It was very slashy. Ben was totally in love with Dan, for sure. But Prince was relentless in his love. Which I loved. Course, Ben Foster will always win in my book.

And yes, I do see what you mean. *g*

OH, and dude, if you have never seen Tombstone? BEST WESTERN EVER!

Oh, man! I can't even believe I forgot to put down Tombstone. "Who's your huckleberry?"

"Tell them I'm comin', and Hell's comin' with me..."

I have that poster on the back of the door of the room I'm in! Shame on me!

oh yes, I have seen Tombstone. Years ago now. I forgot about that one. Should see it again.

I agree with Tombstone being one of my favs. And I like Wyatt Earp and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

And the Ben and Dan slashiness in 3:10...hehe:)

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 03:22am on 27/01/2008
Oh, and Wyatt Earp I've seen too. Ok, I've seen more Westerns than I thought.

It was a fabulously slashy movie.

Emphatically agreeing with TOMBSTONE. This was the movie that turned me around from really not liking Westerns at all, to enjoying them v. much.

Also, there is an old series called The Quest - I was in love with it when I was a teen - Kurt Russell and Tim Matheson as brothers in search of their sister.

Must give props to Calamity Jane too, because I heart Doris Day.

I have seen Tombstone. But years ago. Must watch again. Never heard of the Quest though. I love Kurt Russell.

I've seen some of Calamity Jane. Not the whole thing though.

Never heard of the Quest though. I love Kurt Russell.

I've made a little post on my LJ about it, with a youtube link for the opening credits, if you are keen :-)

so you did! It was when I couldn't get the internet to work properly again after the electrics went. I must go back and look at it. Thanks for the reminder! *has a brain like a sieve*

I felt Ben Foster deserved a supporting actor nom for this role. He was stupendous.

And to think that Christian Bale has never been nominated is just horrible.

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 03:26am on 27/01/2008
He definitely deserved a nod. I still can't get over how amazing he was. So brutal and controlled, but so much emotion at the same time.

And Bale is incredibly versatile. I've given up on the Oscars really. They never seem to reward anyone who should be.

I totally second Pale Rider, The Outlaw Josey Wales is another good one---but then, I am a huge fan of Clint Eastwood's westerns.
(Not John Wayne, so much, even if he is supposed to be the iconic western hero. The only John Wayne western I ever really enjoyed was El Dorado, where there was Robert Mitchum to distract me.)

We need a revival of westerns, darn it! There aren't nearly enough of them being made these days!

I concur. there should be more westerns. I've got a ken for them, now.

I know! Ben Foster was AMAZING in this! He was such a freak! But in a good way!

I loved 3:10 to Yuma too. I really like the original as well, although this version is markedly different from the original. They both have their good points. I love westerns. No one would go with me to see 3:10 to Yuma in the theater. They were all like, "It's a western." And I was like, "Yeah? And? *blink, blink*" "I don't like westerns." *sighs* "But westerns have hot, scruffy men wearing leather, who shoot shiny guns, and ride pretty horses. What about that is not to love?!?" But no... So I had to wait til it was released on DVD too. I like Russell Crowe alright. I love Christian Bale, especially in this. He's *lovely*. And the costumes and the sets and the guns, OMG! *is ded* It's amazing how much of that they were able to find existing locations for...

Suggestions... Let's see... If you want some slashy goodness, there's Red River for starters... and there's the tv series "The Magnificent Seven," which I thought was very slashy, but [livejournal.com profile] susannaheanes doesn't see it. She says that's just how late-Victorian men were. I don't know why that would stop one from slashing, but to each their own. There's also The Magnificent Seven movies from the 60s. The Long Riders comes highly recommended from [livejournal.com profile] susannaheanes, and I saw it over the holidays with her and it is pretty good. She wants an icon of Belle Starr leaning against that bar in Texas that says, "I'm havin' a real good time." She also has high hopes that Brad Pitt's The Execution of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford will be really good. She has a friend who was an historical consultant on it and he says it's going to be amazing. It will be out on video February 5th.

There's also Ned Kelly, which I thought was beautifully done...

And for funny westerns, there's Blazing Saddles, Support Your Local Gunfighter, and The Frisco Kid, all of which I personally enjoy immensely.

why didn't you just go on your own? I always used to go to the movies on my own if other people didn't want to see things, or if they were at work when I wanted to go. *g*

I'm totally going to check out some of those, thank you!

posted by [identity profile] lila-blue-b.livejournal.com at 04:40am on 27/01/2008
You're most welcome! ;D

Oh, I just hate going to the movies by myself. I used to, but I just don't enjoy it as much as when I have people to go with. [livejournal.com profile] remadi said she would have gone with me because she loves Westerns as much as I do, but by the time it was released, she had left already to go to school in South Korea for a semester. But she's back now and as soon as I get her all caught up on Heroes, Prison Break, Bones and Supernatural, we'll watch it. *g*

Oh, Ben is just AMAZING in this. You will LOVE it.

Yes, Ben was slashily fantastic and acting his ass off. Loved his character. :D

I'm seconding "Unforgiven" for your list of must-sees. It literally gives me goosebumps, it's so good.

Ben, I just.... *smooshes him all up*

I'm not sure why I decided I don't do Clint Eastwood. Possibly I was scarred by Clyde (or whatever that orangutan was called), but at some point in like, Jr Hi, I decided I didn't like him. I need to change that.

You have discovered the slashy joy of westerns! Yaay you! Really, it's an under-appreciated genre that I would love to see come back big time.

Also, I am glad I wasn't the only one distracted by the pretty of Logan Lerman. I feel so pervy. He's definitely one to watch.

Anyway, I third (fourth? fifth?) the recs for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - it's beautiful, it's a classic, it's slashier than a very slashy thing, it'll make you cry in the very best way, it's got a young pretty Robert Redford, what more can a girl possibly ask for? Also Red River. I'm sitting on Tombstone right now, which I hear is wonderful, but I haven't watched yet.

Er, we can assume you've seen Brokeback, right? From the icon and all.

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 05:06pm on 27/01/2008
Logan could... like, be my kid. I'm 20 years older than him for goodness sake. He is pretty though. *sigh* and I'm glad I'm not the only one, too! *g*

I have, indeed, seen Brokeback. Only six or seven times. :) Though I am not sure I'll be able to watch it again any time soon. :(

I tried to get Butch and Sundance on instant view last night, but it looks like I'll have to wait for the disc. I watched Romeo must Die instead. Not quite the same, but still good.

Ooh I'm so glad you liked it! I really really enjoyed it at the cinema. Russell Bloody Crowe is great in it, and Ben Foster was just so evil and mean and scary! He really was great! :)

Yes, you must see Unforgiven, it's amazing. And The Missing is a great one too, and you love the Blanchett don't you? ;)

xx

Damn Russell Bloody Crowe *g*

I was crazy in love with Ben Foster, though Charlie Prince scared me to death.

I do love the Blanchette... So many films to add to the list!
