I had just got the ending of my short story down, if not entirely right and was debating whether I should start my essay today as well, when my friend from my course phoned and asked if I wanted to go and see The Golden Compass with her and her boyfriend. That sounded perfect. So I did.

Review follows, under cut in case you want to know NOTHING about the film. I don't intend to be particularly spoilery however. As background, I have read the book three times, but the most recent of those was probably five years ago. I love it, and the series is one of my favourites.

First, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and on the whole thought it was amazing. The girl who plays Lyra is jaw-droppingly good. Especially when you consider that she spent at least half the film (and probably a bit more) acting against no one at all. Though perhaps that's easier to do if you're new to the whole acting gig anyway, and not used to playing off other people. She really... I just can't believe how amazing she was. I also must do a little squee cos she's from Brighton.

The daemons were pretty fantastic, especially Pan, who looked very real in all but one of his guises. And even that one was pretty good, just not perfect. The polar bears were also pretty spectacular.

The casting was phenomenal, Eva Green just WAS Serafina Pekala, in a totally unexpected way. Sam Elliot, Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman... all excellent. And the voice talents were spot on as well, despite some misgivings I had prior to seeing the film.

There were a couple places where the effects weren't quite as good as they might have been, and as expected, there was some of the richness of the book that got lost. The world-building was great, and I think they kept the spirit and meaning of the story really well.

the boy I went with had not read the books and he didn't feel lost or left behind in any way.

In conclusion, if you think you might like it, I think the chances are, you will.

I haven't read any of the books, and I really enjoyed it as well. I especially loved Urik.

I'd read a review that it didnt' make sense unless you had read the book, but I just don't think that would be true. I thought they did a great job. and Iroek was just wonderful. I wasn't convinced that Ian McKellan would have enough depth in his voice, but he was perfect.

*claps hands giddily in anticipation*

I really wanna see it now! A nice treat for after exams this week, I think!

I *love* Eva Green!

*whispers* I think I have a bit of a girl crush on Eva! She is just so glamourous and witty.

I went to see it yesterday with a friend and liked it a lot. I'd heard from several sources that it would be hard to follow if you haven't read the books, but I didn't feel at all lost. I did get the sense that the characters were less developed in the film than in the book, and that if the movie had been longer (which it totally could have been) they'd have been able to make it great rather than just good.

I'd heard the hard to follow thing too, but I wonder if that was kids saying that. It's not really a movie for small children, I think. Though it's been a long time since I was that age *g*

I'm not sure why they didn't make it a bit longer. Though perhaps it was a case of a little more didn't improve it any and it needed a lot more or nothing.

We saw it yesterday (daughter's birthday party--7 kids, 3 adults, oh boy). I haven't read the book, but I thought it was a good movie overall, with wonderful acting, beautiful cinematography, lovely world-building, and coherent. Especially when compared to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which we also watched yesterday (on DVD). The movie cut the book to ribbons.

They did do a wonderful job with GC. Much better, indeed than OotP. That sounds like quite a birthday party! *g*

Glad you enjoyed the film. I kinda enjoyed it, but was expecting it to be better somehow, maybe more hollywood-ised. It has stayed very faithful to the book, which I suppose is a good thing in a way, but it was never really my favourite of the trilogy anyway.

Lyra was really good, and witches were all fantastic!

that's funny, because my only complaint was that it was a little too hollywood-ized *g*

Well, the ending anyway.

I'm always torn between that and Amber spyglass for my fave. Subtle Knife is good, but there's something about it that irks me a little.
