I have been trying for three hours to install the printer driver for my new printer onto my new computer. It will not f-ing do it. I've downloaded the driver for Vista from the HP website but it won't install. I've tried to access it on the disk that came with the printer a multitude of ways.

It says: Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while trying to install it.

The extended attributes are inconsistent.

Wonderful.

I'm starting to want to just scream until my ears start bleeding. I've googled and looked at troubleshooting on the HP site, I've read documents that make absolutely no sense at all, I've eaten lunch and started over. I've checked for solutions in the control panel menu.

nothing is helping. Don't suppose anyone out there has advice?

Unfortunately, not so much having advice as letting you know my MIL went through this with her new computer that's running Vista. From what I've heard this is a common problem. Many of the "vista compatible" printer drivers just aren't. It's not clear if it's an MS thing or what. Being a Mac girl, my assumption is it's MS. ;) Hope someone will have some actual advice for ya.

Vista can suck my arse, quite honestly. I am really starting to wish I'd bought a Mac. This is making me crazy. I should probably just turn it all off and go away for a while...

Yeah. Sometimes that's the best option.

and was her problem ever solved???

Well, she returned the printer she bought. That was her only solution. She still calls us every few days to complain. We keep telling her to send it back & get one with NT which is way more stable. Sometimes, if we're particularly tired of her complaints, we tell her to return it & buy a Mac. ;)

Geesh, someone else on my friendslist has been going through the exact same problem for the last week plus. She has a new laptop w/ Vista and canNOT get the printer to work. She's been back to the shop and everything. You are not alone, but unfortunately I don't think her problem has been resolved either, and I don't have a CLUE, myself.

After spending two days of utter frustration and countless hours online with tech support, I did finally find a solution that worked for me. Thought I would share.
After plugging the printer in and getting the extended attributes error, just close all that up. Now go to Control Panel, Classic View, Printers and select Add A Printer.
Vista will tell you not to use this for a USB printer. Ignore them, and choose local printer anyway. Choose a virtual USB port when it asks. Now select your printer but when it recommends that you use the driver it already has (which just has the same problem as the auto install), tell it to the driver on the disc that came with printer.
That worked for me. Maybe it will help someone else out there.

Oh, hon, that sucks! I wish I had some good computer-savvy advice for you, but unfortunatly, I had trouble trying to download music from Napster today. Legally. Seriously. If it doesn't come with specific instructions, I'm just about lost.

I wish you the best of luck, though. *fingers crossed*.

I'll pick the resident computer geek's brains, and will post back if he can come up with anything that you haven't tried already!

*throws things at Vista for you*
There are shiny features of it that I like (ie. the Post-its on Windows Sidebar)... But then there are issues like McAfee is not compatible with Vista 64b... only 32. And I have 64... *glares*
*using a free program for Virus Protection, while the crippled McAfee still works as a reliable Firewall*

I know that there are lots of issues with Vista/new MS things (ie. WMP Burn feature not working on v.11 when there is ANY other Burn program installed at the same time... wtf?!?)... I hope you get a solution and SOON!
