Courtesy of the late Jerry Falwell:
"The argument that making contraceptives available to young people would prevent teen pregnancies is ridiculous. That's like offering a cookbook as a cure to people who are trying to lose weight."

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. (not the worst, oh no, but certianly stupid)

It seems to me that if you were to give a cookbook, filled with recipes for healthy food, made with fresh ingredients, to a person trying to loose weight, a person who most likely eats a fair amount of processed or resturant food (speaking from personal experience), it is actually going to be quite helpful in their weight loss plans.

Much like giving contraceptives to teenagers having sex is going to help prevent unplanned teen pregnancies. Not all people given the cook book are going to use it, or use it all the time, same as not everyone is going to use the contraception correctly. But both things are going to help.

just my opinion, of course.

How idiotic! It's one of those issues that tends to make certain people go completely irrational unfortunately.

Definately. Especially people like that. It does make me cross though.

Grrrrr. Quotes like that remind me of my pious Religious Education teacher at school who insisted that using condoms would increase the likelihood of you getting pregnant. Er, hello? Just because the Pope thinks they're morally wrong, doesn't mean that they don't do their job of keeping little sperm critters away from women's eggs.

Funnily enough, three girls from my year were pregnant by age 16, probably because we had no contraceptive advice at all. Can't blame the school totally because it was Catholic and wasn't allowed to teach it, but they didn't have to start saying silly things like that.

Teenage pregnancy would be reduced if people felt less guilty/shy/embarrassed about using contraceptives, but that requires education. Think we're singing from the same hymn sheet, no catholic pun intended. *g*

in my experience, the more you know about sex, the less likely you are to have it without intending to. And the more likely you are to have safe, fun sex. Which surely should be a goal.

I think every highschool should have free condom dispensers in the toilets. But I'm kind of a sex-ed fanatic.

I totally agree. Education is the key. Keeping sex a mystery or letting playground myths perpetuate is a sure-fire way of getting yourself knocked up or catching the clap. No-one in politics or education has had the balls to say that yet. Well, they could probably word it a little better but you get the idea *g*.

Condom dispensers in toilets isn't a bad idea. I also think the schools that give out the morning after pill confidentially are doing some good work, although more could be done to prevent the kids needing it in the first place.

Bwuh? Does he actually know what condoms are for? I'd say it was like offering diet meals to people who are trying to lose weight, actually. Unless he also advocates anorexia as a cure for being overweight XD

I don't know who that guy was, but what I do know is that he was a dick.
