In preparation for this whole moving thing I've been getting rid of stuff on freecycle. A woman came round today and we were talking about how not enough people know about it. So I'm mentioning it here in the hopes that more people will start using it.

Go here and find out if there is an active group near you. Just about wherever you are in the world there are freecycle groups, and you can always start one if there isn't one close enough.

The idea is that if you have something you don't want anymore you offer it on the site and someone comes and picks it up. And if there is something you want you can ask for one. It's not like ebay, you don't get money for the stuff (hence the 'free'), but your things go to a good home, you don't have to deal with them any more, and it is a wonderful feeling to be passing on your stuff. Sometimes people are giving away spare CD jewel boxes, and sometimes a bed or an old laptop. Do check it out.

Yayyyy! There's a freecycle group in Paris! I've just joined!

Hurrah! I figured if I even got one person to join then it was worth the pimpage. And then if you like it, you'll tell people about it...

It really is a fantastic way for society to work. And I no longer have an enormous never-used bike rack under my bed or a huge storage tub in my garden shed or a stack of never used picture frames on my desk... I even got rid of a Lenore metal lunch box to the woman who got the bike rack and the frames, I asked if any of her kids would like it, and she decided maybe her five year old would. Hurrah. I'm so glad you joined!

I now love them to bits. I found the Egon Schiele book I didn't think of buying at the Austrian Gallery in Vienna, and gave away to a film-school teacher the screenplay of a never-filmed medieval movie by a director I used to date fifteen years ago. And there's a guy who I think will give me an external floppy drive just when I'd pulled the cord off mine. Whee!

I'm so glad you're getting good use out of it. Wonderful that you've found something you wanted and hopefully something also that you need!

I joined my local group, glanced through last month's posts, and now I'm waiting to hear back from someone who was looking for a typewriter for her mum. (I have a venerable IBM electric, which I took because it was free, and have never used because I couldn't be bothered hunting up a new ribbon---and really, *what* made me think I needed it to begin with?!)

Yay! More freecyclers is what this earth needs. Hopefully she'll want the typewriter and you will have one less thing in your house. :D

Although given how full my house is of STUFF, I've resolved that I must first give away at least five things before I ask for/take anything.

That sounds like a very good plan. Possibly for every time. Give away five things for everything you take. I'm all about the giving away at the moment, what with the moving across and ocean, but I expect I'll be mostly about the taking when I get back to SF.

Well, that's understandable. If I was crossing an ocean and a continent, I'd have to cut my books by at least half, and I'd probably limit the rest to a minimum clothes and comfort stuff. (Because towels and flatware and bedding are cheap and ubiquitous---even if FreeShare were to fail, you're coming to the land of Wal*Mart and dollar stores!)

ZOMG, freecycle is TEH BESTEST! Last year I had 6 weeks to clean out my parents' home, and if it hadn't been for freecycle, I shudder to think how much would have gone into trash.

You're right... this is a VERY worthwhile thing. I shall go to my own journal to provide pimpage. :)

The only thing I dont' like about it is deciding who gets the stuff. I'm not good at any choices that leave people out. Other than that, I love it. Horray for pimpage.

And I've just been wondering what to do with so many of my mom's things, so this is just in time. Also - there are so many groups in my area! Thanks for this. :)

I'm glad I could come in in a timely fashion. I hope it makes clearing out easier.
