RPJ

for those on my flist interested in these things, [livejournal.com profile] kohl_rimmed_eye, who writes amazing fanfiction over at [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch, and you should go and read it if you haven't, slash, femslash, het, House, CSI NY, Torchwood, Lost... just go, anyway, she reports on her journal that she saw Rupert Penrey-Jones in the flesh today, and sold him books. I was excited on behalf of those of you (you know who you are) who might care about such things.

In other news, we have a new sofa and two new wingbacked chairs to go in the upstairs lounge and make it look lived in for people looking at our house, and for B to have when he moves because our lovely sofa that I adore has to stay with the house because it's too big to get out. I have now left Brighton to go somewhere other than London, for the first time in 10 weeks.

I also got my payslips for the last three months today. I cannot believe how much money I am giving up to go do this masters degree. Between my incriment date and the cost of living increase, I am actually earning a pretty decent wage now. Still not sure it's a reasonable sum for the amount of responsibility we have, but still. I'm starting to have money panic.

Woooo! Is he as good in the flesh as he is on TV? If that happened to me I think I would stutter, blush, and generally look mightily star-struck. RPJ in the flesh .... *wills brain to provide a suitably hot dream tonight*

I got so distracted thinking about RPJ I forget to write this: on the money front, it's amazing how quickly you can get used to living on nothing. I went fomr working to being a student and the first few months killed me, but after that, I was ok. Can you get some sort of professional studies/career development loan to help you out? That's what I did. Student Loans just aren't enough.

I lived on 364 pounds a month for three years, and before that was living on essentially nothing at all, so I am sure I can do it. I also have the wonderful equity in my house, so won't have a student loan or anything like that. But living on savings when I'm used to living on income and packing money INto my savings account is going to be awfully difficult to get used to.

I never quite got round to putting money into a savings account even when I was working, but I gues that's going to take a lot more getting used to, psychologically. Having money is definitely better all round though. I can't wait until I'm qualified! *g*

Qualified is definately good, not least on the money front. I am a rather obsessive saver. For the last four and a bit years I've had a direct debit into my savings account as soon as my payslip comes in, and then at the end of the month when the new pay check comes I put whatever is left in my chequing account bar 50 quid into my savings. I managed to buy a car for cash that way, and I now have many pounds (and twice as many dollars, WHOOT) to take back to California with me. And I know this is what I was saving for (never mind that at first I was saving for maternity leave) but it's still very scary to think of spending my savings. I have this constant fear of an even rainier day coming.

This is probably the one and only time you'll be glad of how little the dollar is worth against the pound! When you come and visit after you've moved you'll be cursing it *g*. You sound very disciplined financially. I've had to get better in recent years but whole I was working, I used to spend money on shite and then wonder why I wasn't saving anything for med school... ho hum.

I thought once I'd be working as a doctor that I'd be secure in employment for the rest of my career but it's not looking like that's going to happen, given the state of workforce planning in the NHS at the moment, so it looks like I'll be saving just in case a rainy day comes along. God, I hope I get into the speciality that I want to. *gulp*
