My computer has died. It has an "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME."

Fortunately B's computer is still working. But microsoft tells me that I can solve my problem by inserting the Windows XP disc. apparently not so much. It's claiming that the trouble is newly installed hardware or software. I have no newly installed anything. Except panic. I am trying to remain calm. To keep breathing. But I'm finding it difficult. Yesterday this would have been slightly less of a problem, but this morning I actually started writing again. And now it's gone.

But here's me remembering that B's computer is working. And I can still get to gmail, without which I might cease to function entirely. And yes, I know that makes me slightly sad.

I don't think it makes you sad, just human. Put it this way, if it makes you sad, I am a figure beyond tragedy. Do you have a friendly computer company anywhere nearby? When my laptop screen burned out, I got my local company to copy the whole of my hard drive to disk (all files in order) so I could load up the new computer when it came. They managed to retrieve everything okay even though I thought it was hopeless.

I can not begin to imagine for a second that you are more addicted to gmail than I am, though I will concede that you might give me a run for my money *g*

I am at this moment about to send an email to the nice boy who gave me my 80 gig hard drive a few months ago, hoping he can do something for me.

Oh no! I am stricken with horror for you. Nightmare. Hope you get it fixed soon.

I hope so too. I've just had news from B that he's taking his computer to work tomorrow which makes me feel totally sick. A whole day without my email, I don't know if I will survive. I really don't.

Have you a bootable Ubuntu CD? If not you can make one from the Ubuntu web site on your friend's borrowed computer (be careful to burn the .iso IMAGE to your CD, so that it's bootable.) I ran a computer with a completely dead HD on this for a good while.

Oh, and if you have a livebox or equivalent, you'll be able to go online with it.

I don't know what a livebox is.

my computer is going to the computer fixing man today, so I'll see what he can do for me. I'll keep that in mind though, thanks
