irk

posted by [personal profile] rivers_bend at 04:15pm on 25/01/2007 under
Some things annoy me much more than others.

Misuse of 'literally' is one of them. If Buffy stakes a vampire, it's literally a stab to the heart. If you are madly in love with your best friend and you realise that he's just been sucked off in your bedroom by some 15 year old stalker who is trying to move in with your mother to boot, it's figuratively a stab to the heart.

Just saying.

I love that scene. I love Stuart shoving Nathan's mouth where he wants it after first getting the handjob out of the way as briskly as possible. Hate Nathan's cat-got-the-cream smile afterwards, but then I never much liked Nathan. Stuart was my boy, never mind how nasty he was to Vince. Vince was a moron to fall for that creepy and frankly vile Australian anyway. If I had unrequited love for Stuart, I'd spend my life locked in my bedroom wanking over thoughts of Stuart. I would not go and hook up with a creepy Aussie in a pair of funny underpants.

Like you - just saying...

Vince didn't have a choice. Stuart basically forced him to go out with Cameron. He only did it because he thought it might make Stuart happy. and because there was no way in hell that he would NOT do something that Stuart wanted him to do.

Nathan needed shooting. I hated in the US one that the Stuart character and the Nathan character got together.

Yes but that's like Max telling Julian to go and shag some ugly older bloke because Max is too busy to shag Julian himself, and Julian actually doing it. *g* I'm afraid our boys have totally spoiled me for any other pairing.

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 05:41pm on 25/01/2007
ah, but while Max and Stuart have many things in common, Julian is no Vince. Julian doesn't need to be told to shag someone else, if he wants that he'll find someone himself. And not some old bloke.

Stuart doesn't realise that he wants to shag Vince either. silly man.

*nods emphatically* What I hate even more is that the whole fandom is obsessed about them (Brian and Justin, that is) as a pairing!

*tries again*

My love for the fact that you have a Justin wanking icon knows no bounds.

(clearly my love for the pair of them has bounds. Stuart and Vince and even Nathan, win)

I must admit I never got around to watching the UK version (though I have it on tape somewhere here). In the US version, I always shipped Brian and Michael, and I had a huge soft spot for pairing up Justin with Chris Hobbs (hence the icon). Unfortunately, the fact that Chris' bashed Justin's head in at the end of season one seems to make most people in fandom disinclined to write fic about them. :( Even though they had the most delicious gun!kink scene in season four...

I've only seen seasons 1-3 of the US version. I've watched the UK version countless times. When they aired I watched them as they aired and usually 5-10 times in the week before the next one was on. I then bought them on video and watched them probably another 10-15 times. I just finally got the DVDs and have watched the first 7 with commentary.

I've always shipped Stuart/Vince in a totally hard-core fashion. Obsessively, weepingly, madly.

They are (Stuart and Vince) From Queer as Folk (the UK version)

Oh, lovely, lovely Vince! Thanks for posting that picture. How I loved QAF when it was on. I don't think Cameron was that bad, but he wasn't a patch on Stuart. As for Nathan, there were times when I wanted to shout abuse at the tv containing the words Nathan, sack, bricks and Manchester Ship Canal. Oooh, that boy annoyed me.

I've only seen clips of the US version on YouTube, and they mainly show Brian and Justin shagging/kissing/more shagging. I'm not convinced I want to see any more of it.

Misuse of the words to and too ... grrrrrrrr

There is actually a lot of good stuff in the US version, but it's so ... American in comparison. It looses the bite in the translation. As almost everything good and British does.

Vince is just so wonderful. I adore him beyond reason. And Stuart actually. Way beyond reason, because other than Vinces adoration, there is little to love about him. Other than everything of course...

*goes off into happy daze where Nathan is packed into a sack of bricks and dumped into the Manchester Ship Canal*

*SPLASH* ... bubbles ... stillness ... the wheel of a shopping trolley floats by

I must say I agree with you about Stuart - very much a lovehate emotion. It was seeing Vince and Stuart together that made me love them both so much. So painful, yet so very watchable.

I have an admission to make ... I bought the script book.

*blushes*

I was only young *g*.

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 09:27pm on 26/01/2007
Had that not been a time in my life when I was pretty much living hand to mouth, I expect that I would have the script book too.

*looks at nerdy scriptbook of Serenity, and the comic... and the three versions of Brokeback Mountain, including the script, and the oscar promo book that cost 50 quid on ebay... considers blushing... *

Glad to see that we're all geeks together!

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 09:35pm on 26/01/2007
I have very little time for people who aren't nerds at all. For nerdyness is just a passionate interest in something. and if one isn't passionately interested in anything at all, it seems difficult to imagine that one is all that interesting. So I say nerd (or geek if you prefer) as a high compliment *g*

lol.

Word up. I'm a total spaz about English, though I'm sure you couldn't tell by my lolling and gangsta slang.

What really gets me is when people don't capitalize "I" and other proper nouns. And the beginning of sentences. Or if they leave out important things, like the word "not."

Example:

Ex-gf: i am just enjoying it anymore.
Me: You're... not enjoying it?
Ex-gf: oh yea sorry

O_O;; <--one of the rare times a face is necessary

So, yea. Things like that. I feel your pain.

My shift keys work intermittantly. Which leads to lack of capitalisation on occasion. Though never in fic.

that whole NOT thing amazes me. One of my friends does it all the time in email and it's a constant game of trying to figure out what she means. It does get to the point sometimes though that I can actually see the word when it isn't there.

posted by [identity profile] carnivalesque.livejournal.com at 05:38pm on 25/01/2007
I can't deal with the not thing. I'm doomed to a life alone, because everyone types like friggin morons. At least the ones I fall for.

Tis true. Modern society seems to dictate that speed is more important than accuracy.

Well, even Aaron Sorkin, whose way with words I usually worship, uses the infinitely annoying "I could care less" when he means "I couldn't care less"...

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 06:16pm on 25/01/2007
In which case, Aaron Sorkin needs to be taken out and shot. No, too permanent. He needs to be taken out and lectured. Unless he's doing it to make a point about a character's being stupid or sheep-like.

I totally agree - but then I would, since when I write MSTs I'm there with Foreman saying things like "you can't spell it like that!"

I try to be a bit more relaxed when I'm not MSTing, but it's hard work XD

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 05:56pm on 25/01/2007
Yay! grammar!Foreman makes me happy.

I am sometimes able to be slightly relaxed about some things, but the 'literally' thing just makes me want to scream.

That and 'I could care less.' If you could care less, then go right on and do it!

One of the things that irritates me is the misuse of "there" and "their". Aargh!

There and Their annoys me, but my latest big bug-bear is breathe and breath. I am not sure why that one in particular, but it will make me stop reading a fic faster than anything.

I just want to shoot one as an example to the others... literally... ;)

*sad lack of shooting icon. makes do with confused emu*

There's often minor excuses in emails - although I'm one of the sad types who goes through everything three times to be sure it's spelt and punctuated correctly - but in fics, no excuse at all. Come on, you speak this language, people! Can't you see it doesn't make sense when you write it down like that? Can you hear yourselves? Am I talking to myself? probably...

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 06:32pm on 25/01/2007
*offers shooting icon*

I am willing to forgive quite a lot in emails, as I am often multi-tasking when I do them so will forgive that in others, but in fic... *blood boils* (not literally)

posted by [identity profile] jadesfire.livejournal.com at 06:43pm on 25/01/2007
Ooh, cool icon (who is that?), although I'm quite fond of the emu :D

I comfort myself with the thought that no badfic=no MSTs, so they're almost worth it just for that. Almost. Possibly.

Just about.

It's Famke Janssen. I think from her role in GoldenEye.

I love the emu. though he looks less deadly than he might :)

and yes, badfic does mean MSTs. Which are happy things.

Don't underestimate the emu - have you seen the clips of Michael Parkinson trying to interview Roy Hudd and Emu? Scary...

Actually, he just makes me smile (and, if you stand far enough away, he looks a bit like a small rodent - the beak becomes the face and the eyes are the ears - so maybe he's a shape-shifting emu. That would be scary) *picks up sentence again* and I need to be reminded to smile when talking about bad grammar.

have just reread the above. I think the fact that I'm working the evening shift and am bored out of my tiny mind might show. Just a little.

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 09:41pm on 25/01/2007
It was your particular emu that looks less deadly than your average emu. Or, indeed than Emu. The only Emu I've ever seen is a clip of the Parky interview. The man in insane. And I don't mean Michael...

I have no emu icons, but I do have a giraffe.

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 09:43pm on 25/01/2007
and also, eeek, you are totally right about the small rodent thing. evening shifts... they work evil magic.

I also have another gun icon. never let it be said I'm under prepared with weapons.

Bless you my child! Because that one drives me bonkers. (Although figurative stabs to the heart are treading dangerously close to cliche territory, but that's a different rant.)

I've been on the phone to my mother and your icon has totally mesmerised me.

And shots to the heart are cheesy pop music. Also a different rant :)

I've only seen (and own) the American version of QaF, so I had to read through the entire thread to be sure of what you were talking about!

Here is one big peeve: It repels me more than words can express when I see the use of the word "waste" when the writer means "waist."

::STABBITY STAB STAB::

posted by [identity profile] rivers-bend.livejournal.com at 10:34pm on 25/01/2007
Waste and waist are totally unacceptable as typos for each other. The one is such a delicious thing to have your hands around, and the other, just really and in every way, NOT.

I can't remember if there was an analogous scene in the US version. I sure remember that the rimming scene in the first episode was shot for shot the same. After that the US version gets kind of fuzzy. I've only seen it once, though I do own the first three series. The UK version is superior in every way except number of episodes.

posted by [identity profile] daasgrrl.livejournal.com at 01:23am on 26/01/2007
The best (or at least, most entertaining) explanation I've heard is that it's a figurative use of the word literally. You see. I don't really buy it either but it amuses me :)

Oh ... have you seen this icon (http://www.livejournal.com/userpic/54217645/379954)?

I wish I knew who made it. I've seen various people using it, but haven't been able to find credit for the maker yet, argh!

I ♥ it ...
